(Hagersville, Ontario) netted three goals and freshman midfielder Josh
Ashcraft (Carthage, NY) added two scores as fourth-ranked Rutgers (3-0)
defeated Saint Josephs, 10-3, on Wednesday evening at Finnesey Field.
The Hawks (1-4) jumped on top early, as freshman Joe McNeill scored with
13:06 to play in the first quarter, making just the second time this
season Rutgers has trailed in a game. The Hawks lead would be
short-lived, however, as Rutgers responded with seven consecutive goals
to take a 7-1 in the third quarter.
John Manners (Springfield, PA) tied the game with 10:52 to play in the
first quarter, and Ashcraft put the Scarlet Knights ahead to stay at the
9:14 mark. Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) scored seven seconds later
off a feed from Matt Gaines (Abingdon, MD), as RU held a 3-1 lead at the
end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was dominated by RU - and Powless, specifically.
After Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) put the Scarlet Knights ahead 4-1
at the 12:55 mark, Powless scored the next two goals, including one on an
assist from Blomquist and another off a feed from Manners. The final
tally came with 1:42 to play in the half, as Rutgers took a 6-1 advantage
at intermission.
Blomquist opened the scoring in the second half with his second goal of
the game, and Saint Joseph's responded with the next two goals to cut the
lead to 7-3. Powless, Ashcraft and Mooney scored the only goals in the
fourth quarter for RU's final 10-3 margin.
Blomquist finished with two goals and two assists while Manners and White
each had a goal and an assist. In goal, sophomore Greg Havalchak
(Corning, NY) made five saves and lowered his goals-against average to
4.53 Rutgers held a 35-16 advantage in shots and won 12 of 17 (.706)
face-offs.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, March 13, when they
host the Bobcats of Quinnipiac at 1:00 p.m.
