SJU tallied five unanswered goals to finish the game, but could not overcome a 10-4 deficit. Senior Keegan Wilkinson fueled the comeback with six points, including five assists and sophomore Steve Varga netted a career-high four goals.
Despite needing the furious finish, SJU actually jumped on top early in teh contest scoring the games first two goals. Senior Andrew Four scored off an assist from Wilkinson and Varga followed with his first goal midway through the first quarter.
The Catamounts answered with four straight goals, three in the opening quarter to go on top 4-2. Mike Maher scored twice for UVM and Pete Hein and Adam Kornuth also scored.
Varga's second goal of the contest made it a one-goal game at 4-3, but Vermont responded with three more goals, two more from Maher, to build a 7-3 edge before intermission. SJU added a goal from junior Alex McColough just before halftime and trailed at the break, 7-4.
The third quarter belonged to UVM, as they tallied three goals to start the period and take a 10-4 lead.
Varga added his third and fourth goals of the game to help ignite the SJU comeback. His first came with 1:23 left in the third quarter and he added another at the 13:29 mark of the fourth to trim the lead to 10-6. Wilkinson then added a goal one minute later and freshman Alex Lopes just two minutes after Wilkinson to make it a 10-8 game with more than 10 minutes to play.
The game evened out, but when Lopes scored again with 4:03 to go SJU's comeback was nearly complete. Vermont, however, would withstand the furious finsh to claim the win.
St. Joe's outshot Vermont 35-28 and picked up 31 groundballs to 24 for teh Catamounts. |
