remaining, propelling 12th-ranked Massachusetts past Stony Brook before
over 1,000 fans at Seawolves Field Saturday afternoon. The comeback
victory pushed the Minutemen to 1-1 while the Seawolves fell in the season
opener.
In what was a run-laden second half, the Minutemen trailed 3-1 before the
start of the third quarter. However, they scored five straight goals -
including three in the final 1:57 - to take a 6-3 advantage. Mark Morley
registered a goal and set up his teammates twice in the run. Stony Brook
answered with four straight goals to open the fourth quarter and took
command at 7-6. Brian Abrams started the run and Kevin Pall's man-up
goal finished it. In-between it was Denis Scannell and Jon Tompkins
scoring.
With 5:41 to go, Kevin Leveille scored on a feed from Morley. The game
remained tight until the final minute when Paccione ran to the cage and
scored on freshman goaltender Phil Reed. Pall had an opportunity to force
overtime for the Seawolves, but his shot in front of the crease hit Minutemen goaltender Rob Schneider in
the helmet and bounced away.
Schneider finished with 14 saves while Steve Armsworthy made eight saves and Reed collected two.
The Seawolves open America East play next Tuesday afternoon when they host Hartford at 3:00 p.m. |
