The Game Story:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse men's lacrosse team trailed Army 13-12 with 4:32 remaining in the third quarter before a 6-0 spurt by the Orangemen reversed the lead to 18-13 in their favor. SU held on for a 19-15 victory against the Black Knights at the Carrier Dome in front of 5,765 spectators. It was the season opener for both teams.

Senior attackman Michael Powell (West Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) tied his career high with eight points. He scored three goals and had a personal-best five assists. During SU's 6-0 run late in the second half, Powell was recorded a goal and two assists. Classmate Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) tallied two goals during the run and finished with four goals for the game, equaling his career high.

Syracuse (1-0) scored the game's first two goals and took a 3-1 lead at 10:43 of the first quarter. Army?s Jeff Bryan assisted on a man-up goal and then tallied himself at the 8;20 mark of the first quarter to tie the game at 3-3. Jim Wagner and Jeff Auer scored to give the Black Knights a 5-4 lead by the end of the opening period.

Army held two-goal leads twice in the second quarter thanks to two goals by John Walker. Zack Wallace (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) helped bring SU back. He scored two goals before senior midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) tied the game at 8-8 with 1:50 remaining in the first half. Senior attackman Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) registered a goal 42 seconds later off an assist by sophomore Brett Bucktooth (Onondaga Nation, N.Y./Lafayette). SU led 9-8 at halftime.

The two teams continued to exchange leads. Bucktooth gave Syracuse an 11-9 advantage, but Army went on a run of its own, scoring three-straight goals (by Walker, Marko Kostovic and Jon Burton) to take a 12-11 lead with 8:48 left to play in the third. Lindsay scored on a hard outside shot at 5:22 to tie the game at 12-12. Kostovic netted his fourth goal of the afternoon with 4:32 remaining in the third period. That would be Army's final lead of the day.
