men's lacrosse team defeated No. 20 Loyola, 13-8, in front of 6,399 at the
Carrier Dome. It was the fourth-straight win for Syracuse who is now 7-1 on the
season.
Senior attackman Michael Powell (West Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) equalled his
career high of five assists and finished with a game-high six points. Linemates
Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) and Brian Crockett (Yorktown,
N.Y./Yorktown) each had three goals and one assist. The rest of the scoring was
done by SU midfielders Kevin Dougherty (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) (two goals),
Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) (two goals), Greg Rommel (Syracuse,
N.Y./Henninger) (one goal) and Brett Bucktooth (Onondaga Nation,
N.Y./Lafayette) (one goal).
The Orangemen controlled the game with a 7-1 lead at the 4:08 mark of the
second quarter. Loyola's Patrick Kennedy scored a man-up goal with 3:27 left in
the first half to pull the Greyhounds within five (7-2) at halftime.
Greyhound goaltender Michael Fretwell started to heat up in the second half. He
had 16 of his game-high 20 saves in the second half. Loyola used the defensive
lift to creep back into the game. Stephen Brundage and Nino Othman each netted
goals at the start of the third period to pull Loyola to within 7-4. Syracuse
added a goal in between two more by Loyola. Brundage tallied his second marker
at the 9:12 mark and John Halip fired an outside shot at 8:04 to cut into the
SU lead, 8-6.
The Orangemen forced Loyola into 11 failed clears and handed possession of the
ball over to their talented offensive players. Powell found Crockett with eight
seconds remaining in the third quarter for a 9-6 lead. Powell fired a shot past
Fretwell at 12:03 of the fourth quarter to give SU a 10-6 lead and Vallone made
it 11-6 off a pass from Nee on a man-up opportunity at the 7:31 mark.
Brundage recorded his third goal of the game with 6:55 remaining. Nee netted
his 14th and 15th goals of the season in the remaining minutes for Syracuse.
Matt Monfett, who had two goals and one assist, for Loyola, registered his
second goal with 2:14 remaining in the contest.
Powell, who was chased by two Loyola defenders much of the day, kept his cool
and passed off for assists on four-straight Syracuse goals in the second
quarter. Powell now needs 28 points to become SU's all-time leading scorer.
Today, he moved ahead of Tom Marechek (1989-92) for sixth place on the school's
career points list. Powell owns 260 career points.
The Greyhounds are 3-4 on the season.
Syracuse will next be in action on Tuesday, April 13, for a 7 p.m. showdown
with No. 16 Cornell at Schoellkopf Field.
