the process advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship game with its 17-2
semifinal victory over visiting Drexel Wednesday night on Minnegan Field in Towson Stadium.
The win moved the 11th-ranked Tigers, now 7-5, into Saturday night^Òs CAA championship against the 7th-ranked
Hofstra Pride, the number two seed and a 9-6 winner over Villanova in the other semifinal. Towson, the
tournament^Òs top seed by virtue of its 5-0 regular season league record, will host the Pride in Saturday^Òs
title game beginning at 7:30. The winner will advance to the NCAA Tournament with the CAA^Òs automatic bid.
The Tigers scored early and often in building to a 14-0 lead before the Dragons, who finished their season at
6-8, could score their first goal on an unassisted zinger by Dan Kennedy with 4:53 remaining in the third
quarter. Brendan Morgan took a feed from Mike Filippone two minutes later to account for Drexel^Òs other
tally.
Towson moved quickly to a 5-0 lead on its first 10 shots with senior attackman Todd Spear scoring twice.
Towson^Òs defense, meanwhile, swarmed the Dragons who didn^Òt get off a shot until there was 5:12 left in the
first quarter. Towson finished the opening period with a 6-0 lead and a 22-2 shot advantage, and outshot the
Dragons 60-20 overall.
Towson^Òs senior attack accounted for eight of the Tigers^Ò first 14 goals with Spear and Ryan Obloj
recording hat tricks with Hunter Lochte adding two goals. Senior long pole defenseman Neil Adams got into the
scoring act also, finding the nets twice. It was the third time in his career he scored two goals in a game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Reed Sothoron played 40 minutes for the Tigers, making five saves and allowing one goal
before giving way to Mark DeGroat who closed with three saves while giving up the other goal. Ryan Harney had
15 saves for the Dragons in 46 minutes of work, allowing 16 goals.
Towson^Òs faceoff duo of Zak Smith and Ben DeFelice combined to go 15-3 on draws, helping the Tigers to
numerous scoring opportunities.
The Tigers beat Hofstra 15-8 in the regular season meeting back on April 4 on Towson^Òs field. That was the
Pride^Òs last loss as Hofstra has rattled off six straight wins since and climbed back into the USILA^Òs Top
10 Coaches Poll with an 11-4 record. Among those six wins are victories over Syracuse and Duke.
