The win kept Maryland's perfect record at Towson intact. The Terrapins are now 12-0 at Towson and lead the series 22-5. Maryland improves to 2-1 on the season with the victory. The Tigers fall to 3-1.
Towson scored first in the contest when Keith Obloj tallied on an unassisted goal. McGlone and Joe Walters put Maryland out front 2-1 as the first period was winding down.
The Tigers recaptured the lead on a Casey Cittadino goal followed by an unassisted marker by Oliver Bacon just 35 seconds later. But that was to be Towson's last goal for the next 27:38 of the game as Maryland went on to build to a 6-3 advantage with 4:57 left in the third period.
Jonathan Engelke ended Towson's scoring drought with a goal with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter. A Todd MacMullan goal just 3:05 into the final stanza cut Maryland's lead to 6-5. But it was all Maryland from that point with Xander Ritz starting a final 3-0 run. McGlone punched in two insurance goals for the insurmountable 9-5 lead with 6:25 left in the contest.
"It was a game of two halves," said Tiger coach Tony Seaman. "Maryland controlled the second half. When we only have 27 shots, we're gonna lose."
Towson outshot Maryland 19-16 in the first half but the Terps put the clamps on in the final 30 minutes, holding the Tigers to just eight shots the rest of the way while bombarding Towson's goal with 29 shots. Maryland finished with a 45-27 shot advantage over Towson.
"This was a really good game by both goalies," Seaman said. "For us, the problem was that we couldn't put one past (Harry) Alford."
The Terrapin goalkeeper stopped 12 shots. Towson netminder Reed Sothoron had 16 saves.
Towson is back in action again Tuesday night when they host 12th-ranked Rutgers in Unitas Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Maryland travels to Bucknell on Tuesday. |
