on as the Tigers (4-4, 2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 12-10
victory over Villanova (3-6, 1-3) Saturday afternoon in a Colonial Athletic
Association contest.
Villanova enjoyed an early 4-1 lead. When a Mike Holloway (Malvern
Prep/Malvern, Pa.) goal gave the Wildcats a 6-4 lead with 7:17 remaining in the
second quarter, Towson made a goalie change, relieving freshman Reed Sothoron
(St. Mary's Ryken/Lexington Park, Md.) with sophomore John Hunt (Christian
Brothers Academy/St. Louis, Mo.). Hunt closed the quarter with 5 saves which
seemed to slow down the Villanova attack. He finished the game with 11 saves
and allowed only 4 goals the rest of the way.
With Villanova on top 8-5 late in the third period, Towson's Brad
Monaco (Orhcard Park H.S./West Seneca, N.Y.) picked up a loose ball off a Sean
Philbin (Gonzaga H.S./Annapolis, Md.) save and scored to start the Tigers on
their decisive 6-0 run. After Josh Cornett (Severna Park H.S./Severna Park,
Md.) scored for Towson, the CAA's leading scorer, Kyle Campbell (Mt. Hebron
H.S./Ellicott City, Md.) got hot, scoring the next three goals on the crease
with nifty assists from Brad Reppert (Loyola H.S./Lutherville, Md.) and Ryan
Obloj (Farmingdale H.S./Farmingdale, N.Y.). Cornett finished the run on a
screamer from out front for an 11-8 Towson lead with 7:39 left to play.
Villanova fought back, getting goals from Richie Kratz (Delbarton
H.S./Succasunna, N.J.) and Matt Lucas (Paul VI/Fairfax, Va.) within a 29-second
span but two costly penalties stemmed Villanova's momentum. Peyton Chane
(Loyola Academy/Lake Bluff, Ill.) ended the scoring on an extra man goal with
28 seconds remaining in the game.
Campbell paced Towson with 4 goals. Holloway led Villanova with 4.
Towson's Zak Smith (Skaneateles H.S./Skaneateles, N.Y.) won 19 of 24 faceoffs,
giving Towson numerous offensive opportunities. Philbin went the distance in
the nets for the Wildcats, making 16 saves. Villanova's leading point man,
Brian Marks (Downington H.S./Glenmore, Pa.) who had 15 points in his last three
games, was checked for just one goal. Towson's man-down defense played well,
holding Villanova to two goals on five extra man opportunities. The Wildcats
entered the game as the nation^Òs top man-up offense with a .531 success rate.
Towson is back in action again this Wednesday night when the Tigers
travel to UMBC for a 7:00 p.m. date with the Retrievers. Villanova hosts
Lafayette at 7:00 p.m. this Tuesday.
