17th-ranked UMBC (4-3, 1-3 ECAC), 11-8, before 744 fans at UMBC Stadium.
The Retrievers took a 3-1 lead after one quarter, sparked by a pair of extra-man goals by senior midfielder Scott Steele. But
just 1:53 into the second quarter, the Minutemen had drawn even and junior attackman Kevin Glenz gave the visitors the lead
for good on an unassisted goal at the 6:13 mark. After midfielders Kevin Leveille and Chris Fiore added goals five and six, Glenz
extended the U. Mass lead to 7-3, converting Neil Lundberg's feed with 35 seconds to play in the quarter.
But UMBC fought back gamely, as senior attackman Josh Gerber broke the 6-0 run with a goal with ten seconds left in the
first half, and scores by Joey Kestermann and Brendan Mundorf brought the Retrievers to within 7-6 at the 5:12 mark of the
third quarter. Even with UMBC face-off specialist Pat Muston winning all five third quarter draws, it was U. Mass that scored
the final two goals of the stanza, with leading scorer Jeff Zywicki getting on the board for the first time at the 7:09 mark and
Chris Doyle tallying at the 13:16 mark.
Gerber gave UMBC some hope as he picked off a clearing pass and scored into an unguarded net as the Retrievers were down
a man just 1:26 into the fourth quarter to trim the deficit to 9-7. But U. Mass netminder Bill Schell had nine second half saves
and thrwarted UMBC at several key moments, while Zywicki (8:17) and Fiore (13:39) added insurance markers for the victors.
Fiore (3g, 1a) led all goal scorers with three scores, and he tied Glenz (2g, 2a) for game scoring honors with four points.
Leveille (2g, 1a) also had a three-point day for U. Mass. Gerber led the Retrievers with 2 goals and 1 assist, while attackman
Phil Grillo and Steele had two goals each.
UMBC outshot U. Mass, 32-28, but Schell made 15 saves to Tim Flanagan's 10 in the UMBC nets. Muston won 16 of the
game's 23 draws and his 10 ground balls gave UMBC a 28-18 advantage in that category.
Both teams were coming off one-goal losses in league games last week, as U. Mass bounced back after a 11-10 loss to Penn
State and the Retrievers dropped their second straight after last weekend's 12-11 overtime setback at Rutgers. The schedule
gets no easier for UMBC, which takes on a hot Towson team on Wednesday and concludes the home schedule with North
Carolina on Saturday. |
