The Retrievers will face the three-time defending champion Albany, a 14-13 overtime winner vs. Stony Brook, in Sunday's title game. UMBC has now won five straight games and seven of its last eight.
The game was the lowest scoring game in the history of the America East Tournament (2000). In 2003, top-seeded Hartford nipped fourth-seeded Vermont, 6-4.
It was the third quarter which again made the difference for UMBC. They had outscored their last three opponents, 14-5, in the third quarter and snapped a 2-2 halftime tie with a pair of third quarter scores. Senior attackman Brendan Mundorf scored an unassisted goal just 2:57 into the stanza, coming from behind the goal to beat Binghamton netminder Kevin McKeown one-on-one. Midway through the quarter, UMBC broke a Bearcat clear, and Kimener picked up a loose ball at fed Drew Westervelt for a score at the 7:03 mark.
Kimener gave UMBC a 5-2 lead 36 seconds into the fourth quarter when UMBC again broke a Binghamton clear and Kimener ripped a shot high into the net from ten yards away. Binghamton�s Rob Williams cut his team�s deficit to 5-3 with his second goal of the game with 11:55 remaining, but the Retriever defense held the Bearcats off the board the rest of the way and Kimener scored into an empty net with 2:57 remaining.
With three goals and a helper, Kimener produced his third straight game with four points or more. Mundorf and Westervelt each contributed a goal and an assist, while junior midfielder Kelvin Moulden scored his first collegiate goal. Williams led Binghamton with two goals and an assist.
Both goalkeepers were outstanding, as UMBC netminder Jeremy Blevins made eight saves, while allowing a season-low three goals. McKeown had nine stops for the Bearcats.
The last time UMBC allowed three goals in a game was in 2000, when they posted a 15-3 win over Stony Brook.
