second half, including three in a row to break a 7-7 tie midway through the
third quarter, as the No. 10 Loyola men's lacrosse team defeated Villanova,
14-9, in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game at Villanova Stadium
Saturday afternoon.
Loyola (8-2, 5-0 CAA) trailed 7-3 after Villanova's Matt Lucas scored with 8:18
left in the second quarter, but the Greyhounds then scored the next 11 goals in
a 33:13 span. Loyola scored the final three goals of the second quarter to cut
the Wildcat lead to 7-6 at halftime, then got three straight goals from
Brundage in a seven-minute span to take a 10-7 lead 57 seconds into the fourth
quarter.
The Greyhounds then poured it on from there, getting a second three-goal run
from Brundage to take an insurmountable 14-7 lead midway through the fourth
quarter. The Wildcats (4-7, 1-4 CAA) finally got back on the scoreboard with
5:13 left in the game with the first of two straight goals by Scott MacMullan,
but it was too little too late.
In addition to Brundage's six goals, doubling his previous career best, Michael
Sullivan had three goals and three assists in a return to his hometown of
Philadelphia. Chris Summers had two goals and three assists as Loyola's
starting attack combined for 11 goals and 19 points overall.
The game looked nothing like a Greyhound rout early on as the Wildcats scored
four consecutive goals, including two from Randall Calvert, to take a 5-3 lead
after one quarter. Goals by Mike Holloway ad Lucas then pushed Villanova's lead
to 7-3, but the Greyhound defense and goalie Mark Bloomquist (nine saves) would
then hold the Wildcats off the scoreboard for the next 33 minutes.
Lucas led Villanova with three goals, all in the first half, while Calvert had
two goals and an assist. The Greyhound defense held Villanova scoreless in the
third quarter, the 10th time in 10 games this year Loyola has held an opponent
scoreless in a quarter.
The Greyhounds also dominated the faceoff "X," with Ryan Radonis winning 19 of
25 draws. Loyola outshot the Wildcats, 32-25.
