Despite leading, 5-3, at halftime and scoring a quick goal to open the third quarter, the Quakers gave up four third-quarter goals and watched their lead slip away.
"We are definitely disappointed," Head Coach Brian Voelker said of his team's first contest of the season. "In the first half, we really controlled the game and did the things we needed to do to win. Unfortunately, we didn't do that in second half. It was a game we could have won, but let it slip out of our hands a little bit."
Greg Klossner had a stellar first half, giving up just three goals, but the Quakers' defense fell apart a bit in the second half, particularly in the third quarter, by not clearing the ball well.
"Villanova really controlled the play in the third quarter," Voelker continued. "They really pressured us and we didn't handle that very well. We also gave them too many second-chance opportunities and they capitalized on them.
On the scoring end, junior DJ Andrzejewski had two goals and two assists and sophomore David Cornbrooks had two goals, while classmate Samuel Oher scored his first collegiate goal.
"We now have to get back to work on Monday and get ready to play Air Force on Thursday," Voelker said. "I have always told these guys that win or lose, we have to put the game behind us and move on to the next one. On Monday, we will continue to get better by working on our defense and controlling the ball a little better."
The Quakers will head to Colorado next week to face Air Force on March 10, before competing at Denver on March 13. |
