third quarter to break open a tight contest and post an 11-4 win over
Mount St. Mary's Tuesday evening at Klöckner Stadium.
The win raised the Cavaliers' record to 5-0 this season, their best
start in two years, while the Mount dropped to 0-2. Virginia also
remained undefeated in night games at Klöckner Stadium, winning all
14 games.
Junior Matt Ward led the Cavalier offense with two goals, the fourth
time this season he's led. It is also his 10th multi-goal game in a
row dating back to last spring.
Sophomore Kip Turner started in the cage for Virginia and registered
five saves and allowed three goals before giving way to Bud Petit for
the final six minutes. Petit gave up one goal and had a save.
The visitors from Maryland drew first blood at senior midfielder Andy
Petcoff beat Turner for his first goal of the season just over three
minutes into the contest. The lead was short-lived as Hunter Kass and
freshman Drew Garrison scored 28 seconds apart less than six minutes
in to give Virginia the lead for good.
Senior Brendan Gill pushed UVa's lead to 3-1 at the 9:19 mark of the
second quarter, but Mount St. Mary's Eric Seifert answered a short
time later. Ward closed the first half scoring with his first goal of
the game less than two minutes before halftime as the Cavaliers held
a slim 4-2 lead at the break. The Cavaliers peppered goalie Dan
Whitehurst with 29 shots in the opening 30 minutes, but had trouble
beating the junior netminder, who recorded nine of his 15 saves in
the first half.
Whatever head coach Dom Starsia said in the locker room worked as the
Cavaliers scored six goals on just 12 shots to stretch the lead to
10-3 late in the third quarter. All six goals were scored by
different players. J.J. Morrissey set the tone by scoring just 14
seconds into the second half to spark UVa to its best quarter of the
game.
Jason Werner ended the Cavalier outburst with his goal on the Mount's
only shot of the quarter with 55 seconds remaining.
Senior John Christmas tallied his only goal of the game 30 seconds
into the final period before Werner closed the scoring with his
second goal with 4:52 remaining.
Senior Jack deVilliers won better than 70 percent of his faceoffs
(12x17), the fourth game in a row he's been better than 55 percent.
The Virginia defense allowed just 18 shots, with eight coming in the
fourth quarter, and held the opposition to fewer than 10 goals for
the fourth time this season.
The Cavaliers return to action this Saturday against Towson at
Klöckner Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 1 pm.
