a Joe Yevoli feed 2:18 into overtime to propel Virginia to a 13-12
win over North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament at a
rainy Klöckner Stadium Friday night.
The Cavaliers advance to meet Duke, a 7-6 winner over Maryland in the
first semifinal game. It's the second year in a row the teams have
clashed for the title. Duke has won the last two ACC Championships.
The championship game is Sunday at 3 pm and will be televised live on
Comcast Sports Net, Fox Sports Net South and the Sunshine Network.
Virginia moves to 8-2 on the season, while the Tar Heels fall to 5-6.
Virginia gained a 10-7 win in their regular season meeting 13 days
ago.
North Carolina bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the first period before
Virginia came surging back with six unanswered goals. The three UNC
goals were scored by Kyle Bell, Lance Zimmerman, and Austin Garrison.
Virginia followed up with three goals from John Christmas, and one
each from Chris Rotelli, Glading and Jack deVillers. The teams
flip-flopped in scoring to allow Virginia to take the 7-5 lead into
the locker room at halftime.
The Tar Heels had the momentum coming out of halftime as they scored
two straight goals. Freshman Scott Falatach scored his third goal of
the evening and sophomore Mike McCall added another as North Carolina
tied the score at 7-all. Yevoli scored his first goal of the night
and freshman Kyle Dixon followed his teammate's shot to put the
Cavaliers back up by two. North Carolina's Steven Will added the last
point of the third period by hitting the back of the net with 1:10
left on the clock.
The Cavaliers and Tar Heels traded scores before North Carolina
scored three straight goals to end the fourth period and send the
game into overtime.
Christmas led the way with three goals and an assist, while Rotelli
tallied three times. Freshman Matt Ward added three assists. Tillman
Johnson was spectacular in goal with a career-high tying 18 saves. At
least a dozen of his saves where from shots at near point blank range.
