Hill was helped by sophomore Tim Moran, who had five points, and freshman Jamie Wulforst, who added two goals.
Moran got the Keydets (2-5, 1-0 MAAC) on the board early on the crisp, 60-degree day, scoring less than four minutes into the contest. His ninth goal of the season gave VMI a 1-0 lead, which it would hold until the 5:51 mark, when Marist (0-4, 0-1 MAAC) began a brief two-goal run to take its initial advantage, and its only lead of the day. The Red Foxes led for just twelve seconds, as Hill notched his first marker of the contest, and third of the season, to tie the score at 2.
Late in the period, Hill hit Wulforst with a pass, which the freshman put past Marist goalkeeper Ryan Penner to give the Keydets a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
Most of the second quarter was played in a 3-3 tie, after Marist opened the scoring by Corey Zindel finding Matt Francis at the 10:46 mark. The Keydets were able to respond late in the period, behind two Moran passes to Hill for goals, and Wulforst’s second tally. The three goals gave VMI a 6-3 halftime lead.
The Red Foxes attempted a rally, scoring the first two goals of the second period, but the Keydets held fast. With VMI clinging to a 6-5 lead, Hill fired a shot past Penner for his fourth goal of the day. After the goal, the senior appeared to demonstratively point towards the Marist bench, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty being assessed to the VMI attack.
Despite the penalty, the goal and resultant emotion appeared to lift the Keydets, as they went on to score early in the fourth period, and take a three-goal lead with 12:58 to play. Marist cut the deficit to two at one point, but Hill put the game out of reach with his final goal, a tally notched at the 2:55 mark off a Moran pass. The Red Foxes scored the final goal with 23 seconds remaining to account for the final 9-7 margin.
VMI was led by Hill, whose six points give him eleven for the season, a total that is second on the team behind Moran. In addition, VMI goalkeeper Sean McCoy made a total of seventeen saves, including nine in the final quarter. Visiting Marist was led by Zindel, who had two goals and two assists in a losing cause.
The Keydets return to action on Saturday, March 22, as they travel to Providence, R.I., to take on the Friars of Providence College. Game time is currently scheduled for noon. |
