ranked Yale Bulldogs handed the Harvard Crimson their seventh straight loss
by a score of 6-5 at Johnson Field.
Yale's seniors, who were honored before the game, completed a clean
sweep of the Crimson, going 4-0 for their Bulldog careers. The victory was
Yale's season-high fourth in a row.
Sophomore midfielder Scott Kenworthy led Yale with one goal and two
assists, while Edward Britt scored two goals for the Elis. Harvard's five
goals were spread among five different scorers.
The Bulldogs held leads of 4-1 and 6-3 over the Crimson, never
trailing in the contest. Harvard scored the only two goals of the fourth
quarter pulling within one on Jay Wick's goal with 5:39 remaining.
Harvard's first of the final stanza came when Doug Logigian shot one over
Wenzel's right shoulder with 11:44 left.
Harvard controlled the ball for most of the fourth quarter before the
Elis regained possession with about five minutes remaining. After Yale
managed to burn about four minutes off of the clock, Harvard regained the
ball with 1:04 left to play, trailing 6-5. Logigian's 20 foot shot with 25
seconds left was blocked by Yale's Todd Montgomery, who corralled the
ground ball for the Bulldogs. Harvard had one final chance with 10 seconds
left, but Doug Kocis' pass was knocked down by Montgomery, sealing the win
for Yale.
Harvard outshot the Elis 50-30, and won 10 of 14 faceoffs, but could
not solve Wenzel and the Yale defense, which has given up just 10 goals in
the last two games.
"The play of Eric Wenzel and our defense was outstanding," said Yale
head coach Mike Waldvogel. "The defense handled the pressure with poise.
The first H-Y-P championship for us in 13 years and having a senior class
that never lost to Harvard are huge."
Edward Britt burst in front of the crease with 6:33 left in the first
quarter to open up the scoring for the Elis. Ryan Capilupi then flipped one
in with 5:10 to go in the first, giving Yale a 2-0 lead. Harvard cut the
lead to one on a Matt Primm goal with 3:27 to go in the first. Yale's Scott
Kenworthy finished off the scoring in the period, netting one from the
right side with 24 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Tucker Foote opened up the scoring in the second for Yale, flicking
one past Jake McKenna with 9:50 left, to give Yale a 4-1 lead. Harvard
narrowed the Yale lead to two on Michael Baly's goal with 6:13 left in the
half. James Christian followed that up with another Crimson goal with 1:34
remaining, just seconds after a Yale penalty had expired.
Edward Britt opened the scoring in the second half for Yale, notching
his second goal of the game with 6:40 left in the third. The Bulldogs then
stretched the lead back out to three with 3:01 left in the third, as Marko
Lujic netted one off of Mike Scaglione's second assist of the contest.
