After the Bulldogs scored on two early possessions, Dean Gibbons, last week’s Ivy League Rookie of the Week, moved from behind the net and shot the ball into the top corner to get Harvard (6-7, 1-4 Ivy League) on the scoreboard at 6:27 of the first quarter.
Later in the opening period, Zach Widbin tied the game, 2-2, at 2:01 on an unassisted tally, the senior’s eighth of the year. However, Yale (4-9, 0-6) regained the lead with only 18 seconds left to play in the first when Jonathan Koenig found the back of the cage with a shot from in front.
The Crimson’s Nick Sapia made it a 3-3 contest at 10:19, but once again, the tie was short lived, as Yale tallied two goals within the next four minutes to retake a two-goal advantage, 5-3.
With less than one minute remaining in the half, sophomore Jason Duboe added to his team lead in goals with his 24th of the season, firing a shot into the net to pull Harvard within one score at halftime, 5-4. After the first 30 minutes, Harvard held a 14-13 advantage in shots, while the Bulldogs led 16-14 in ground balls. The Crimson had the lone penalty of the first half.
In the third quarter, junior Max Motschwiller tied the game, 5-5, at 10:46 after a long possession for Harvard. The Crimson then took its first lead of the afternoon when freshman Francis Ellis capitalized on an unassisted opportunity at 9:50. During this two-goal run, Harvard took five consecutive shots before Yale finally took possession after the Ellis goal.
The Crimson earned a one-minute man-up opportunity with 3:10 left in the third, but Harvard could not push another goal across as the game remained, 6-5.
Harvard opened up its largest lead, 7-5, after sophomore Jesse Fehr became the seventh different Crimson player to score, as he tallied a goal with 8:46 remaining in the game.
In the final minute of play, Motschwiller and Duboe each added their second goals of the game to clinch the 9-5 victory for the Crimson. Motschwiller’s second tally came on a man-up chance.
Harvard senior captain Evan O'Donnell earned his first start of the season in net, making five saves. Yale goalie George Carafides turned aside nine shots. Harvard led in shots, 29-23, but trailed in ground balls, 31-27, and faceoffs, 11-7.
The Crimson concludes the regular season with a home contest against Dartmouth Saturday, May 3. The contest will also serve as Senior Day for Harvard. The action will begin at 1 p.m., at Harvard Stadium. |
