The non-conference contest took place at Binghamton's East Middle School. The win marks the second time in three games where the Bearcats upset a ranked team. Both of these wins (Towson and Hobart) are teams at which current Binghamton head coach Ed Stephenson was an assist at prior to his arrival at Binghamton.
"Hobart is a very tough team that brings a potent offense," Stephenson said. "This win is another big step or our program."
The game was close from the beginning. The first quarter only marked one goal which was first collegiate goal by freshman midfielder Kevin Joy (Camillus, N.Y.) on a pass from junior defender Jeff Kaylor (Beverly, Mass.) with 10:13 left to play in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Hobart's David O'Quinn struck back to tie the score at 1-1 with 13:36 left to play in the half. Freshman attack Chris Mulheron (Canandaigua, N.Y.) gave the Bearcats a 2-1 lead before halftime on an assist from junior attack Rob Willams (Fulton, N.Y.) just over two minutes later.
The third quarter both offenses awoke, each netting three goals. Hobart scored a pair of goals within the first four minutes of the quarter to take a 3-2 lead. At the 10:16 mark Williams netted his third goal of the season on an assist from freshman midfielder Bobby Bush (Canandaigua, N.Y.). Nick Currie of Hobart stuck back to give the Statesmen the lead with 3:57 to play in the quarter. McNamara scored his first goal of the game on an pass from senior midfielder Brian Chaapel (Penn Yan, N.Y.) with just over three minutes to play in the quarter to tie the score at 4-4. Junior attack Nate Kerstein (Rochester, N.Y.) netted an extra-man goal with 1:50 to play in the quarter, Mulheron was credited with the assist.
Hobart's Jeff Ryan scored the first goal of the fourth quarter with 10:16 left in the game to tie the game at 5-5. McNamara unassisted scored his team-high sixth goal of the season with 9:07 to play. Freshman attack Jake Boyce (Pittsford, N.Y.) netted his fourth goal in as many games with 3:35 to play.
Hobart owned the shooting edge 32-24. Senior goalie Kevin McKeown (Brewster, N.Y.) could be called the hero of this game making 13 effortless saves in the win. The Statesmen have scored double digits in goals in their three previous games and were averaging over 12 goals a game. The Bearcats held them to less than half of that.
"Both our defense and goaltending were outstanding today," Stephenson said. "Kevin played as good a game as anyone possibly could in net. He was simply amazing."
Binghamton was 1-6 in extra-man opportunities while Hobart was 0-1. The Statesmen won 11 of the 15 faceoffs and dug up 30 of the 51 ground balls.
Binghamton travels to Sacred Heart for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday. |
