The Retrievers improved to 6-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in America East play. The win assures UMBC of a spot in the top four in the conference with two games remaining on the schedule. The Bearcats fell to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in league play.
There were four ties and three lead changes in the first half as the teams went to intermission deadlocked at four-all. But UMBC put together a strong third quarter, outscoring the Bearcats, 5-0, to take command. Junior midfielder Evan Kay started the surge by converting a James Hyland feed just 1:11 into the stanza. Then the Retriever attack went to work as senior attackman Brendan Mundorf fed linemate Andy Gallagher for a goal at the 10:35 mark and Mundorf assisted on Westervelt’s third score of the game, a man-up goal, exactly two minutes later. Mundorf posted his third consecutive helper as he set up Westervelt again at the 2:26 mark. Senior middie Brian Tobin closed the quarter as he scored UMBC’s first man-down goal of the season with just 12 seconds to play in the stanza.
Mundorf posted his fourth helper of the game as he assisted Westervelt’s final score at the 10:39 mark and junior midfielder Josh Porcell gave UMBC a 11-4 advantage at the 7:47 mark of the quarter. UMBC held Binghamton scoreless for over 34 minutes until Jake Boyce closed the scoring on a goal with 1:07 to play.
Westervelt added an assist to finish the day with six points, while Mundorf posted four assists. Kay and Hyland also were multiple-point producers with a goal and an assist each. Rob Williams had two goals for the Bearcats.
UMBC freshman netminder Jeremy Blevins made eight of his ten saves in the second half as he permitted just the one Bearcat second-half tally. Blevins also posted a team-high seven ground balls as UMBC amassed 34 ground balls to 21 for Binghamton.
UMBC outshot the hosts, 33-29, and Bearcat netminder Kevin McKeown posted a dozen saves.
UMBC plays at Vermont next Saturday. |
