The Game Story:
QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior Toby Banta (Melrose, Mass.) and junior Luke Marchand (Concord, Mass.) each scored two goals as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated St. John's, 7-5, this afternoon in non-conference action in the season-opener for both teams. With the win, the Crusaders start the season 1-0, while the Red Storm start the season 0-1.

Banta also added one assist to lead the team with three points. Sophomores Edison Parzanese (Edgartown, Mass.) and Chris Smirti (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) each had one goal and one assist, while freshman Matt Moran (West Henrietta, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal.

St. John's was led by Justin O'Donnell and Tom Manes who each had one goal and one assist.

St. John's started the game with three straight goals. The Red Storm took a 1-0 lead with 6:45 left on the clock in the first period with a goal by Graeme Gillespie. St. John's then increased its lead to 2-0 when O'Donnell netted a goal with 1:43 left in the first. Jack Rosson began the second period with a goal to make it a 3-0 game. The Crusaders then went onto score five unanswered goals. Marchand scored Holy Cross' first goal of the game with 12:55 on the clock to make the score 3-1. The goal was assisted by Smirti. With under a minute to play in the half, Parzanese made it a 3-2 game.

In the third period, Marchand tied the game at 3-3 with his second goal of the game. Banta earned an assist on the goal. Smirti then gave the Crusaders a 4-3 lead, while Banta made it a 5-3 game with 1:55 left in the period. With 7:40 remaining in the fourth period, Rob Gannon scored for the Red Storm to make it a 5-4 score. Banta and Moran each scored a goal to increase the Holy Cross lead to 7-4. Parzanese assisted on Banta's goal. Manes then cut the lead to 7-5 with 4:48 remaining, but that would be last goal of the game for 7-5 final score.

Holy Cross junior goalie Jimmy Harrison (East Williston, N.Y.) made 10 saves to earn the win, while Gavin Buckley stopped seven shots for St. John's. The Crusaders outshot the Red Storm by a 31-28 margin.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, February 23, when they travel to New Haven, Conn., to meet Yale at Reese Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
