Despite the loss, the Red Storm played the Greyhounds toe-to-toe, taking six more shots and winning nine of the 14 battles from the faceoff circle.
Midfielder Justin O'Donnell (Levittown, N.Y.) played his best game of the season, picking up a hat trick on ten shots while attackman Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) tallied two goals. Meanwhile, goaltender Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, N.Y.) stopped eight Greyhound shots.
Despite Loyola outshooting the Red Storm, 9-3, and also taking the groundball advantage, 11-3, St. John's scored the lone goal of the first quarter thanks to O'Donnell. This was the first time this season the Greyhounds did not score in the first quarter.
In the second, Loyola attackman Ryan Rabidou took advantage of a man-up opportunity, scoring five minutes into the period. The Red Storm took the lead back three minutes later when Michaelsen netted a goal and O'Donnell converted an extra-man chance at the 2:25 mark to make the score 3-1. Loyola answered though with just 30 seconds left in the half on another Rabidou goal to bring the Greyhounds within one.
St. John's was held scoreless in the third quarter while Loyola went on a three goal run. Andrew Spack picked up two of the goals, tying the game at 7:48 and then giving the Greyhounds their first lead of the game at 4:10.
But the Red Storm battled back in the fourth. Michaelsen put St. John's within one while O'Donnell knotted the contest up at 5-5 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
The Greyhounds Patrick Kennedy grabbed the unassisted game-winning goal with just under seven minutes left. St. John's took six shots in the final six and a half minutes in an effort push the game into overtime but was unsuccessful.
St. John's falls to 2-3 on the season, 0-2 in conference play, while Loyola improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the league.
The Red Storm hits the road this Saturday as it collides with the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The two programs have met only one time, which was last season when the Cadets squeezed by the Red Storm, 13-11, at DaSilva Memorial Field. |
