| | | | Current Record : (2-6) | Current Record : (3-4) | | | | Team Page For 2005 | Team Page For 2005 | | | | | | The Game Story: | QUEENS, NY – Freshman Nate Sanderson (Orangeville, Ontario) scored a game-high four goals as the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (3-4, 1-1 ECAC) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 9-6 victory over St. John’s (2-6, 0-3 ECAC) at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, NY on Wednesday.
Sanderson, who started for the first time on March 19 against Army, now has 12 goals in his past four games, following a four-goal effort against Hobart last Saturday. On defense, junior All-America goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) made 12 saves.
In the first quarter, freshman midfielder Brian Melvin (Livingston, NJ) made the first career start of his career start and responded with a goal at the 14:02 mark of the first quarter to stake the Scarlet Knights to a 1-0 lead less than one minute into the game. SJU’s Justin O’Donnell even the score at 1-1 three minutes, and Randy Mills converted an unassisted goal that put the Red Strom up 2-1 with 2:11 left in the opening quarter.
Sanderson connected on a fast-break goal with 45 seconds left in the first quarter, noting the score at 2-2. He also scored off a feed from Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY) that gave the Scarlet Knights a 3-2 edge with three minutes gone in the second quarter. Rutgers maintained its one-goal lead for the rest of the quarter, despite several scoring opportunities that were snuffed out by SJU goalie Dave Saccente.
O’Donnell tied the game at 3-3 with 10:35 remaining in the third quarter, but Sanderson quickly put RU back in the lead with his third goal of the game. Rutgers dominated time of possession in its offensive zone, outshooting SJU 10-4 in the third quarter, but Saccente made three saves.
Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA) and Lovejoy scored back-to-back goals that gave Rutgers a three-goal cushion with 12 minutes to play, but the Red Storm responded with a goal to cut the lead to 6-4. Sanderson’s fourth goal of the day came off a feed from Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY), and Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) made the score 8-4. Austin Rodgers (Towson, MD) closed out the scoring for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers had a 40-31 advantage in shots, killed off one of SJU’s two penalties and was successful on all 23 of its clear attempts. Blomquist finished with two assists, and has a team-high 22 points through seven games (10 goals, 12 assists).
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, April 2, when it hosts ECAC foe Loyola (Md.) at 1:00 p.m. in Piscataway, NJ.
