| The Game Story: | Laurinburg, N.C. - Third-ranked Limestone defeated St. Andrews 9-6 in a
battle for first place in the Deep South Conference men's lacrosse
standings.
Both teams came into the game with a 4-0 record in conference play.
Limestone, three-time defending Deep South Champion, improves to 6-1 on the
season while St. Andrews drops to 5-5.
Stephen Belderes put the Knights on the board first when he scored on a pass
from Mike McCarthy four minutes into the contest. Twenty-five seconds
later, the Saints evened the score with a goal from Travis Gillespie.
A goal from Brendon Burke at the 4:53 mark gave St. Andrews a 2-1 edge, but
the Knights would not lead again. Limestone's Nick Carlson tallied three
straight goals to give the Saints a 4-2 advantage in the first quarter.
Limestone went into the break with a 7-3 lead, but St. Andrews would not
surrender. Belderes took a pass from Keith Belward to score the second of
his two goals at the 12:35 mark of the third quarter. Carlson reeled off
two more goals for the Saints, but Limestone would not score again in the
contest.
McCarthy and Scott Gordon scored for the Knights in the fourth quarter.
Sean Jurecic also recorded a goal, and Travis Hill had an assist.
Goalie Kevin Woods collected 11 saves for St. Andrews. Matt Malloy had 15
for Limestone.
The Knights will play Mars Hill in their final regular season conference
match-up. Game time is 3 p.m. Wednesday in Mars Hill.
