three hat tricks and goals from 11 different players at the No. 2
Panthers defeated the host Bates College Bobcats in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action today.
The Panthers (12-1, 8-1 NESCAC) earned the top seed in the NESCAC
tournament which begins tomorrow. Middlebury receives a bye will host
the semifinals and final next weekend.Bates (8-6, 4-5 NESCAC) earned
the seventh seed, despite today's loss. The Bobcats will face No. 15
Bowdoin tomorrow at 1 p.m. Bates defeated the Polar Bears, 10-7, in
Brunswick earlier this season.
Bates scored first in today's game as senior Patrick Gaughan
(Duxbury, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal less that four minutes in.
The Panthers tied the game just over a minute later on a goal by
senior Zach Herbert (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). herbert assisted
classmate Greg Carroll (Topsfield, Mass.) with five minutes left in
the period, while Matt Dunn (Kent, Conn.) put Middlebury up 3-1.
Bates sophomore Peter Fedullo (Williamson, N.Y.) cut the lead in half
with 63 seconds left in the first and tied the game midway through
the second period. Middlebury then scored three of the next four
goals and never trailed again.
Herbert led all players with four assists and five points, while
Dunn, Carroll and sophomore Mike Saraceni (No. Syracuse, N.Y.) each
scored three goals. Bates got two tallied each from Fedullo, Gaughan
and senior Dave Frederick (W. Hartford, Conn.). Bates junior Matt
Dobbyn (Warren, R.I.) made 13 saves in the losing effort, while
Middlebury sophomore Erick Krieger (Princeton, N.J.) made seven stops
for the win.
