With its fourth straight loss, Bates (9-4, 5-4 NESCAC), ranked No. 17 in Division III in the USILA coaches' poll, dropped to the fifth seed in the NESCAC Championship and will play at fourth-seeded Tufts University (10-5, 5-4 NESCAC) in the first round Sunday at 1 p.m., in a rematch of last Saturday’s double-overtime game which Tufts won 8-7 at Bates.
No. 9 Middlebury (10-3, 8-1) gained the top seed in the tournament for the sixth time in as many tournaments. The Panthers have won the NESCAC Championship every year since the tournament began in 2001.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, and extended it to a 6-2 goal differential with 5:30 left in the second quarter.
Bates controlled the game going into the fourth quarter, in the final period the Bobcats had trouble clearing the ball, failing on seven out of 10 chances, and they were outshot in the period 14 to 1.
Leading the scoring for the Bobcats were sophomore Justin Simon (Canaan, N.H.), sophomore Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.), and senior David Pritchard (Narbeth, Pa.), who notched two goals apiece. Sophomore Bryan Frates (Woodstock, Vt.) contributed a goal and an assist, while fellow sophomore Craig Blake (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) added two assists. Junior Amadi Cisse (Hanover, N.H.) also netted one goal.
Sophomore attackman Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) fueled Middlebury’s offense, tallying three goals and an assist. Sheehan scored twice for the Panthers, while J.P. Coviello (Summit, N.J.), Nick Bastis (Old Greenwich, Conn.), Travis Meyer (Potomac, Md.), and Aaron Herter (Carlisle, Mass.) each contributed a goal and an assist.
Bobcat goalie Paul Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) stopped nine shots, including two point-blank saves during the Panthers’ late-game push. Middlebury goalie Alex Palmisano (Southport, Conn.) also stopped nine shots, contributing to their victory. |
