The Polar Bears (10-5) advance to the NESCAC Semifinals to be played at Middlebury College next Saturday. Bowdoin will face second-seeded Wesleyan in a rematch of a 2007 First-Round playoff game next Saturday with gametime and ticket information to be announced next week. The Camels' season comes to an end with a record of 10-6.
In a game that featured seven lead changes, the fourth and fifth seeds battled for sixty minutes without result. Conor Malangone scored the game's first goal for Connecticut College before the teams traded two-goal runs to pass the lead back-and-forth four times in the opening half. Steve Dachille scored twice for the Camels in a 1:16 span midway through the second quarter to give the Camels a 5-4 lead, but Bowdoin's Thadd Welch netted the game-tying tally with 3:55 left in the period to send the game into halftime tied 5-5.
A pair of Ben Eishchen goals immediately after intermission gave Connecticut College a lead that they would maintain for most of the second half, as the visitors held a 9-7 advantage for most of the fourth quarter. Trailing by that score with three minutes remaining, Smith trimmed the lead to 9-8 with a score at 3:01 of the fourth period. After a Max Key faceoff win, Mike Giordano netted his third goal of the game just 1:05 later to tie the game at nine apiece. Then, following another Key faceoff win, Rob Halliday put the Polar Bears ahead off a one-timer feed from Adam Tracy behind the net with 1:04 remaining.
Undeterred, the Camels rallied and gained possession with under 30 seconds to go. Kevin Nally ripped a shot from the right side that slipped inside the left post with 12 ticks left to send the game into overtime.
Key won another faceoff to start the extra session, and Bowdoin never surrendered the ball. Smith scored the game-winner off a screen at the top of the circle, snapping a low shot past Camel goaltender Mark Moran for the game-winner 1:34 into overtime.
Giordano scored three goals to lead the Polar Bears, while Smith pitched in a pair of tallies. Tracy had three assists for the Polar Bears, who out-shot the Camels 42-28. Gordon Convery (one save) and Alex Gluck (two saves) split time in net for the Polar Bears.
The Camels were led by a hat trick from Dachille and two scores from Eischen. Ryan Hayes had a goal and two assists while Moran finished the contest with 14 saves.
