champion Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon, 9-8. The Polar Bears break Middlebury's 21-game winning streak,
the longest in the nation. Bowdoin, ranked 17th in the latest national poll, improves to 7-2 on the season while the
Panthers drop to 8-1.
In a rematch of last season's NESCAC Championship Game, the Polar Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead when Simon McKay
broke up the middle and netted a goal at 11:05 of the first. Two straight goals by Zach Herbert gave the Panthers a
2-1 lead after one frame. The Polar Bears knotted the score at two in the second period when Kyle Courtiss scored at
8:44. The Panthers bounced back late in the quarter as Zach Herbert and Matt Dunn scored back-to-back goals with
under two minutes remaining to give Middlebury a 4-2 edge at the intermission.
A goal by Josh Allen just ten seconds into the third quarter cut the Middlebury lead to 4-3, but Dunn answered again for
the Panthers, scoring at 14:08 to regain the two-goal advantage. Two straight scores by Ford Gurall and Ted
Scholhamer tied the game for Bowdoin at the 5:52 mark, but the Panthers managed to regain the lead just under a
minute later when David Seeley found the back of the net at 4:32 to give Middlebury a 6-5 edge.
The Polar Bears took control in the final quarter, scoring four straight goals to take a 9-6 lead. Allen scored another
quick goal at 14:52 before Jordan Fay went coast-to-coast to give Bowdoin the lead at 7-6 with 10:59 left. Allen
notched another goal at 6:33, scoring as he fell backwards to the ground to take an 8-6 advantage before Kyle
Courtiss rifled a shot from ten yards to up the lead to 9-6. The Panthers added two late scores by Greg Carroll and
Matt Frissora, but failed to take advantage of a man-up opportunity with less than two minutes to play as the Polar
Bears hung onto the win. P.J. Prest was outstanding in net, making 17 saves, while Eric Kreiger made 10 stops for
Middlebury. |
