(March 31) – Cabrini sophomore Matt Conaway scored on a feed from B.J. Kletcheck with 2:17 to play to lift the host Cavaliers to an 11-10 win over defending NCAA Division III national champion Cortland State Saturday afternoon.
Cabrini led 8-6 at halftime thanks to back-to-back goals from Casey Grugan (three assists) to close out the half. But Cortland, which stunned Salisbury in last year’s national championship game, outscored the Cavs 4-0 in the third quarter to take a 10-8 lead into the final period.
Thanks to a stingy Cavalier defense and some tough play in goal by Cabrini keeper Kevin Quinn, the visiting Dragons would not score again. Quinn turned back 11 Cortland shots, six in the fourth, to help preserve the win.
Cabrini’s fourth quarter rally started at the 14:20 mark when Dan Leigh scored on a feed from Kletcheck to cut the lead to 10-9. Conaway notched the game-tying goal on an assist from Grugan with 11 minutes to go.
Eight players scored for the Cavaliers, who improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference play. Other goal scorers for the Cavs included Scott Reimer (one goal), Conaway (three goals), Pat Jenkins (one goal), Kletcheck (one goal, two assists), Bill Cordts (one goal) and Chris Barron (one goal, one assist). Also collecting assists were Matt McKinney (one assist) and Jeff Moore.
Cortland was paced by Bill Fuchs, Kyle Simensky and Ryan Heath who each scored two goals.
The win is the second of the season for the Cavaliers over a nationally ranked team. The Cavaliers topped 13th ranked Hampden-Sydney in overtime earlier this month, but this win is even more impressive.

Cortland State captured the NCAA Division III national championship last May at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia with a last second overtime win over defending national champ Salisbury. This season, Cortland (3-4) is ranked 14th in the nation.
Cabrini, winners of the last five PAC titles, has made five straight trips to the NCAA Division III tournament. The Cavaliers return to action Tuesday when they host Immaculata at 7 p.m. |
