| | | | Current Record : (1-5) | Current Record : (3-2) | | | | Team Page For 2007 | Team Page For 2007 | | | | | | The Game Story: | A solid defensive effort by the Clarkson University Lacrosse team and a four-goal effort by sophomore Greg Gibbons helped put a scare into Cortland State, but the defending national champions held off the Golden Knights to earn an 8-6 win at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Dragons (3-2) took a 1-0 lead in a tight first quarter on a goal by Kyle Simensky and made it 3-0 three minutes into the second stanza before Clarkson (1-5) answered back with three goals by Gibbons to tie it with 2:13 left in the half. The Red Dragons grabbed a one-goal advantage after the opening 30 minutes on Ryan Heath’s second goal of the contest, a man-up tally with 48 seconds remaining in the half.
Cortland out scored the Knights 3-1 in the third to take 7-4 lead after 45 minutes. Sophomore Tom Ross (Adams, NY) put Clarkson back on the scoreboard late in the third, but the Red Dragons went up by three once again with 19 seconds left in the period.
Sophomore Cory Schneider (Yorktown, NY) and Gibbons made it a one-goal game with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but Adam Hyde scored his second of the game with 3:17 remaining and Cortland’s sophomore goaltender Matt Hipenbecker held off the Green and Gold in the final minutes preserves the win for the visitors.
Gibbons led all scored with five points (4-1). Heath paced the Cortland attack with three goals.
Both teams had 24 shots. Junior Greg Lamb (Baldwinsville, NY) made eight stops and picked up a game-high five groundballs for the Knights, while Hipenbecker also finished with eight saves.
Cortland held a slight advantage in groundballs, 28-24, while Clarkson held the edge n faceoffs, winning 8-of-15 draws. Senior defenseman Nick Lavdas (Lafatette, NY) recorded four groundballs for Clarkson. |
