The Game Story:
CORTLAND -- Junior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park) scored three goals and the Cortland defense tied an NCAA Division III tournament record by allowing just one goal as the nationally third-ranked Red Dragons (16-2) defeated 11th-ranked Clarkson 9-1 in opening-round action at Davis Field.

The win, which is Cortland's first NCAA victory since 1986, propels the Red Dragons into the national quarterfinals Sunday at Ithaca College (a 16-15 overtime winner versus Western New England College) at a time to be announced.

Clarkson (11-2) took a 1-0 lead three minutes, 28 seconds into the game when junior Matt Diana (Marshfield, MA) scored off an assist from junior Jim Lavelle (Hamburg). The Golden Knights, however, were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way as Cortland's defense matched a tournament record previously set twice by Hobart College, versus Roanoke in 1986 and versus MIT in 1980. Cortland junior goalie Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) made 10 saves in 55:33 of action and junior Michael Draper (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) stopped two shots in the final 4:27. Senior defenseman Justin Mendelson (Massapequa Park/Farmingdale) led the Red Dragons with nine ground balls.

Cortland tied the game on Elvin's unassisted goal with 9:44 left in the first quarter and took a 3-1 lead on two goals by senior Rob McKeefrey (Melville/Half Hollow Hills West), both assisted by junior Craig Degnan (Rockville Centre/South Side), at the 7:08 and 0:49 marks of the quarter. Elvin and senior Derrick Raeder (Niskayuna) scored unassisted goals in the first four minutes of the second quarter and senior Mike Maraia (West Islip) added an unassisted tally with 6:25 remaining in the half to give Cortland a 6-1 lead.

Degnan scored the only goal of the third quarter with 10:17 left off a McKeefrey assist and Elvin and sophomore Andrew Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) each found the net in the final four minutes of the game. Elvin's goal came on an extra-man opportunity and was assisted by sophomore Drew Hyatt (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt), who was playing in his first game after missing Cortland's last 12 contests due to injury.

Elvin finished with three goals and one assist, McKeefrey added two goals and one assist and Degnan recorded a goal and two assists. Sophomore Andrew Pultz (Farmingdale) won 6-of-9 faceoffs.

Clarkson freshman goalie Joe Zebrowski (Liverpool) made 15 saves in 59 minutes of action. Junior Ryan McCarthy (Camillus/West Genesee) scooped up a team-high nine ground balls.
