The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored eight points on five goals and three assists to become the seventh player in school history to reach 200 career points, and senior Billy Fuchs (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) added seven points on five goals and two assists as the nationally third-ranked Cortland men’s lacrosse team defeated 11th-ranked Geneseo, 18-7, Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference and clinched the regular-season title with the victory. The Knights fell to 10-2 and 5-1.

Heath now has 206 points on 120 goals and 86 assists in just three campaigns, including 75 points on 41 goals and 34 assists this season. Junior Joey Morgan (Putnam Valley) added two goals and an assist for Cortland and senior Josh Cittadino (Baldwin) scored two goals, collected a game-high seven ground balls and won 14-of-18 faceoffs. Senior Keith Greene (Brentwood) and sophomores Chris Dutkowsky (Vestal), Neal Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) and Brian Krol (Niskayuna) each found the back of the net once, and senior Kyle Simensky (Locust Valley) chipped in with two assists. Junior goalie Mike Robinson (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) made six saves in 56 minutes, 45 seconds, before giving way to junior Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ), who stopped one shot in the final 3:15.

Senior Mike Pizzuto (Amherst) and junior Tom Costanza (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had two goals and one assist apiece for the Knights. Senior Steve Hutton (Webster/Webster Thomas), junior Mike Cintineo (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and sophomore Ray Ryan (Syracuse/Corcoran) each scored once. Junior goalie Eddie Watts (Mt. Kisco/Horace Greeley) registered 12 saves in 52:32, and sophomore Dennis Costanza (Webster/Webster Schroeder) did not make a save over the final 7:28.

Geneseo led, 2-1, eight minutes into the game before the Red Dragons went on a seven-goal run to open up an 8-2 lead at the half. Heath recorded his 200th point on an unassisted goal at the 10:06 mark of the second quarter that put Cortland ahead 6-2. Cortland stretched its lead to 11-3 midway through the third quarter, but Ryan and Pizzuto netted goals a little more than a minute apart to change the momentum and make it an 11-5 game. Fuchs responded with his fifth of the game to close out the scoring of the third period at 1:56 and give the Red Dragons a 12-5 lead.

The Red Dragons put the game away with a five-goal burst in the opening 4:03 of the final quarter to build their lead to 17-5. Hopps made it 18-5 with 5:45 remaining and Hutton and Cintineo finished the scoring for the Knights with goals at 4:24 and 3:51. Cintineo’s score came with the man advantage.

Cortland outshot Geneseo, 45-24, in the game, held a 50-28 advantage in ground balls and won 17-of-28 faceoffs.
