visiting Geneseo 13-0 in a SUNYAC tournament semifinal game at Davis Field.
The Red Dragons (14-2), who are ranked fourth in the country in scoring
defense at six goals allowed per game, will host Oneonta in the conference
championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner receiving an
automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Oneonta defeated Oswego
22-12 in Wednesday's other semifinal game at Oneonta.
Junior goalie Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) made
seven saves for Cortland's second shutout of the season. The Red Dragon
defense was sparked by the solid play of numerous players, including senior
Justin Mendelson (Massapequa Park/Farmingdale), senior Chris Osiecki
(Endicott/Union Endicott), sophomore Frank Estrella (Suffern), senior Louis
Lago (Valley Stream/Valley Stream South) and junior Rob McCurdy (Lynbrook).
The Red Dragons outshot the Knights (9-4) 39-15, including a 23-6 margin in
the second half. Junior Craig Degnan (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored
four goals in the second half as the hosts pulled away from a 3-0 halftime
lead. Degnan finished with five goals and one assist and freshman Adam
Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) added three goals and two
assists.
The Red Dragons led 1-0 after one quarter, the lone goal coming from Degnan
off a Hughes assist 2:41 into the game. Cortland added two goals in the
first five minutes of the second half. Sophomore Andrew Roth (Ridgewood,
NJ/Don Bosco Prep) scored the first of his two goals in the game when he
converted a pass from senior Mike Maraia (West Islip) with the Red Dragons
a man up. Senior Steve Blanshan's (North Merrick/Holy Trinity) unassisted
goal with 10:59 left in the half increased the lead to 3-0.
Geneseo sophomore goalie Andy Howk (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) made
eight of his 15 saves in the first half to keep the game close. The
Knights' best scoring chance came in the final seconds of the first half
when a point-blank shot in front of the cage by sophomore Tim Killoran
(Syracuse/Henninger) was stopped by Feltmann.
Degnan, Hughes and junior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park) scored in the third
quarter to extend Cortland's lead to 6-0 and the Red Dragons found the back
of the net seven times in the final 15 minutes, including three goals by
Degnan and two by Hughes.
