The Game Story:
CORTLAND, N.Y. ? Junior Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) matched his
career high with five goals and added two assists and junior Billy Fuchs
(Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) scored four goals to lead the nationally
11th-ranked Cortland men?s lacrosse team to a 19-11 victory over Gordon in
its home opener Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Red Dragons evened
their record at 1-1, while the Fighting Scots fell to 0-2.

For Cortland, junior Josh Cittadino (Baldwin) and freshman Brian Krol
(Niskayuna) each netted a pair of goals, and senior Ryan Simensky (Locust
Valley) added a goal and two assists. Five other players scored one goal.
Sophomore Michael Robinson (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) started in goal
and made three saves in 38:18 before giving way to sophomore Matt
Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes), who played the final 21:42.

Freshman Andrew Kirkaldy (Red Deer, AB/Hunting Hills) led the Fighting Scots
with four goals and an assist. Freshman Matt Videon (Newtown Square,
PA/Marple Newtown) recorded three goals and an assist, freshman Danny Mack
(Dublin, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) contributed two goals and two assists and
freshman Joel Derechinsky (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Area Christian) scored
two goals. Freshman goalie Mike Kaminski (Monticello, MN/Monticello)
registered 17 saves.

Goals came often in a high-scoring first quarter, as Cortland grabbed a 7-5
lead behind Heath?s three scores. Cortland extended to a 9-6 advantage at
intermission with Heath and Fuchs sandwiching goals around Kirkaldy?s second
goal of the day. The Red Dragons put the game away in the third quarter,
outscoring Gordon, 5-1, for a 14-7 lead. Cortland eventually built a 19-9
lead late in the game before late goals from Videon and Derechinsky
accounted for the final margin.

Cortland outshot Gordon, 54-18, and held a 57-43 advantage in ground balls.
The Red Dragons converted 4-of-9 man-up opportunities, while the Fighting
Scots were successful on both of their man-up chances.
