Prep) scored six straight goals, including the game winner 58 econds into
overtime, to lead nationally sixth-ranked Cortland to a dramatic 13 12 win
over fourth-ranked RIT Wednesday afternoon in men's lacrosse action. With
the win, the Red Dragons improved to 5-1, while the Golden Flyers fell to
5-1.
After a slow-paced initial 13 minutes of the game, the teams netted three
goals in a 54-second span to close the opening quarter with Nazareth
holding a 3-1 lead. In the second quarter, the Red Dragons controlled much
of the play and held a 13-5 advantage in shots. Cortland tied the game at
3-3 early in the second stanza with goals from sophomores Jason Lambert
(Brentwood) and Dan Schmitt (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse).
Schmitt's effort was a 35-yard shot by the close defender as Cortland was
working a clear. Nazareth regained the lead on senior T.J. Rogers'
unassisted goal at 11:12. Red Dragon freshman Blake Gale (La Fayette) sent
the teams to the locker rooms at halftime tied at 4-all with a goal at
3:25.
The Golden Flyers dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Red Dragons
7-3 en route to an 11-7 lead. The quarter featured a four-goal blitz in a
two-minute span by Nazareth, erasing a 5-4 deficit. Senior Justin Wahl
(Penn Yan) scored two of his team-high five goals, including one while a
man down, and senior Brian Navarra (Watertown) and junior Bryan Coon
(Freeport, ME/Freeport) each netted a goal in the flurry. Lambert stopped
the momentum with his second of the game to bring Cortland to within 8-6.
Nazareth pumped in three of the next four goals to take a four-goal lead
into the final quarter and set up Roth's heroics.
Wahl opened the fourth with his fifth goal just 12 seconds into the stanza,
giving the Golden Flyers their largest lead of the game, 12-7, and the
early momentum. From that point on, however, the game was Roth's. He netted
the first of his four man-up goals at 12:18 off a feed from junior Adam
Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse). Just 18 seconds later, Roth
again connected with a man advantage, this time assisted by sophomore Matt
O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee), to make it a 12-9 game.
The Golden Flyers clamped down and appeared to still be in control with
less than four minutes remaining, but Hughes set Roth up for his third
consecutive man-up goal at 3:33. At 1:05, it was freshman Ryan Simensky's
(Locust Valley) turn to assist a Roth goal, picking up his career-high
fourth assist of the game in the process. After Nazareth was whistled for
its second non-releasable penalty of the quarter, Cortland had possession
with less than a minute remaining. Coming out of a timeout with 20 seconds
left, the Red Dragons worked the ball around the perimeter until O'Connell
found Roth, who skipped a low bouncer past Nazareth sophomore goalie Alex
Civalier (Rochester/Penfield) with just seven seconds on the clock to tie
the game at 12-all.
Nazareth won the faceoff to start overtime, but Cortland sophomore Ben
Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage), who entered the game early in the fourth
quarter, denied Golden Flyer senior Brandon Brown's (Ithaca) low shot. With
possession, Cortland called timeout and put the ball in Roth's stick. Roth
worked his defender one-on-one to the left side of the box and rifled a
shot over Civalier's left shoulder at 3:02 to earn the win.
Sophomore Bryan Scipione (East Meadow) started in goal for Cortland and
made eight saves, before giving way to Gaebel, who stopped two shots.
Civalier had 17 saves for the Golden Flyers.
