Chris Balash (Auburn) each scored three goals as Nazareth College defeated
SUNY Cortland, 10-8, in the NCAA Division III tournament quarterfinals. The
sixth-ranked Golden Flyers (15-2) earned a spot in the national semifinals
on Sunday at Middlebury College, at a time to be announced, while avenging
a 13-12 regular-season overtime loss to the second-ranked Red Dragons (15-3).
Sophomore Alex Civalier (Rochester/Penfield) made 13 saves for the Golden
Flyers, including eight in the second half. Cortland sophomore goalie Ben
Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) recorded 12 saves.
The teams were tied 6-6 at halftime after a see-saw first half that
featured four ties and three lead changes. Cortland took a 2-0 lead 3:46
into the game on goals by senior Drew Hyatt (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt)
and sophomore Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee). Senior defenseman
Frank Estrella (Suffern) assisted on Hyatt's goal. Nazareth, however,
scored the next three goals between the 7:50 mark and the 3:27 mark of the
quarter. Senior Brandon Brown (Ithaca) scored off a Justin Wahl (Penn
Yan/Penn Yan Academy)assist, senior Brian Navarra (Watertown) tallied off a
Bryan Coon (Webster) feed and Wahl connected off a Navarra assist.
Cortland tied the game at 3-3 with 1:45 left in the first quarter on senior
Andrew Roth's (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) extra-man goal. Mike Felice
(Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) assisted on the goal. The Red Dragons took a 4-3
lead on sophomore Kyle Lambert's (Brentwood) goal 1:24 into the second
quarter. Nazareth tied the game 2:25 later on a Balash unassisted goal, but
unassisted goals by freshman Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley) and O'Connell
gave Cortland a 6-4 lead with 6:29 left in the half.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Adams scored, assisted by Navarra,
just 27 seconds after O'Connell's tally and Balash netted the tying goal
with 2:06 left in the half.
After the 12 combined first-half goals, the teams only scored once between
them over the next 19:05. Adams, set up by Coon, scored with 13:11 left in
the third quarter to give the Golden Flyers the lead for good at 7-6. The
score stayed that way until the 10:55 mark of the fourth quarter when
Balash's goal gave Nazareth an 8-6 lead.
That goal was the first of four in a 2:01 stretch for the teams. Coon
converted a Chad Amidon (Marcellus/Onondaga) pass with 10:05 left to give
the Golden Flyers a 9-6 lead. Cortland won the ensuing faceoff and freshman
defenseman Cheney Raymond (Camillus/West Genesee) scored off an Andrew
Pultz (Farmingdale) pass with 9:50 left to bring the Red Dragons back
within 9-7. That goal, Raymond's first of the season, ended a 26-minute,
39-second scoring drought for Cortland. Adams answered right back with 8:54
left to extend Nazareth's lead to 10-7.
Neither team scored again until junior Adam Hughes (North
Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored off an O'Connell pass with 1:40
left. Cortland won the next faceoff but was unable to score. Nazareth was
able to regain possession and run out the clock.
Navarra and Coon each finished with a goal and an assist for Nazareth.
O'Connell led Cortland with two goals and one assist. Hyatt scored once and
finished his career fifth in career scoring at Cortland with 198 points (92
goals, 106 assists). Lambert reached the career 100-point mark with his
goal in the contest. He has 84 goals and 16 assists in two seasons.
