The Game Story:
ENDICOTT, N.Y. -- Trailing by three in the first quarter and tied at halftime, fourth-ranked SUNY Cortland outscored 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University 15-3 in the second half to defeat the Battling Bishops 21-9 in a battle of nationally-ranked Division III squads at Union-Endicott High School. The victory came in Cortland head coach Lelan Rogers' first game against his former team. Rogers coached at Ohio Wesleyan from 1990-99 and took over the Red Dragons' helm in 2001. He was 4-0 versus Cortland while the head coach at OWU.

The Bishops (2-3) took a 5-2 lead with 5:36 left in the first quarter. Senior Matt Coughlin (Denver, CO/Regis Jesuit) and freshman John Schlegel (Chevy Chase, MD/Gonzaga) each scored twice during the early run. Cortland (4-1), however, scored the final three goals of the quarter, capped by junior Craig Degnan's (Rockville Centre/South Side) goal off a Drew Hyatt (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) assist with 45 seconds left to tie the game at 5-5. Cortland took a 6-5 lead 11 seconds into the second quarter on a goal by junior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park), but OWU tied the game with 7:48 left in the half on a tally by senior John Galvin (Port Washington/Kent (CT)).

The Red Dragons scored the first four goals of the third quarter to take a 10-6 lead and led by at least three goals the rest of the way. OWU was within 13-9 on a Galvin goal 1:35 into the fourth quarter, but the Red Dragons shut down the Bishops the rest of the way and scored eight goals in the final 10:35.

Elvin led Cortland with four goals while sophomore Andrew Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) and Degnan scored three goals apiece. Hyatt finished with two goals and three assists, senior Rob McKeefrey (Melville/Half Hollow Hills West) added two goals and one assist, senior Patrick Gorman (Lindenhurst) scored twice and freshman Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded a goal and two assists.

Coughlin led OWU with two goals and two assists. Galvin finished with two goals and one assist while Schlegel and junior Andy Rowe (Alpharetta, GA/Penfield (NY)) scored two goals each.

Cortland junior goalie Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) made 10 saves, five in each half. OWU freshman goalie Paul McCommons (Smyrna, DE/Dover) recorded 26 saves. Cortland outshot the Bishops 73-25, including a 45-10 margin in the second half.
