Division III, earned an automatic NCAA berth with a 14-5 victory over
16th-ranked Oneonta in the finals of the SUNYAC Tournament Saturday
afternoon at Davis Field. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 15-2
and established a new school record for victories, while Oneonta dropped to
12-4.
Cortland's defenders and defensive midfielders were able to shut down
Oneonta's high-powered offense, which put up 22 goals in a SUNYAC semifinal
win over Oswego, while its offense controlled the play and generated
excellent scoring chances.
Senior Matt Puerta (Hicksville) put Oneonta on top at the 13:33 mark of the
first quarter with an unassisted man-up goal, but Cortland answered back
with three straight scores by sophomore Andrew Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don
Bosco Prep), junior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park) and senior Jason Lambert
(Brentwood). After Puerta cut the lead to 3-2 with his second goal, junior
Craig Degnan (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored his first of a game-high
six goals for Cortland off an assist from freshman Adam Hughes (North
Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse). Oneonta junior Dan Bakke (Floral Park)
made it 4-3 at the end of the quarter off an assist by senior Anthony
Pisciotto (Port Jefferson/Ward Melville).
In a second period dominated by ball control, Cortland netted the only two
goals, a man-up score by Degnan assisted by junior Tommy Maier (Fairport)
and Roth's second goal assisted by Elvin. Cortland outshot Oneonta 18-3 in
the quarter after holding a 13-11 edge in the first 15 minutes, but led
only 6-3 at intermission.
Cortland controlled 9-of-10 faceoffs in the third quarter and turned those
possessions into seven goals, including the first four of the quarter to
claim a 10-3 lead. Degnan collected three straight scores, while senior Rob
McKeefrey (Melville/Half Hollow Hills West) contributed three of his
game-high four assists. Pisciotto ended Cortland's string at 6:45 of the
stanza, but Cortland struck for three more goals and a 13-4 lead before
Pisciotto netted Oneonta's final goal of the game with eight seconds
remaining in the quarter. Roth completed the scoring with the only goal of
the fourth quarter.
Junior goalie Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) stopped
12 shots in 54:19 of action for Cortland, while junior Michael Draper
(Massapequa Park/Massapequa) played the final 5:41, registering no saves
and allowing no goals. Oneonta sophomore Mike Louer (Islip) played all 60
minutes between the pipes and made 18 saves.
