assisted on another and junior Craig Degnan (Rockville Centre/South Side)
recorded three goals and two assists as nationally fourth-ranked Cortland
(6-1, 3-0 SUNYAC) defeated visiting Oswego 17-7 in a SUNYAC matchup.
Oswego senior goalie Darin Ledwith (Rochester/Rush-Henrietta) kept the
Lakers (2-4, 0-1) in the game early, making 11 saves in the game's first
eight minutes, many from point-blank range, before allowing a goal. The Red
Dragons finally solved Ledwith with six minutes, 40 seconds left in the
first quarter when senior Jason Lambert (Brentwood) tallied an unassisted
goal. A goal by Elvin off a Degnan assist with 3:24 left and another
Lambert goal with 55 seconds remaining gave the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead
after one quarter.
Cortland outscored Oswego 6-2 in the second quarter, led by two goals from
freshman Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) and a goal and
two assists by senior Mike Maraia (West Islip). The lead grew to 11-2 on
two Degnan goals in the first three minutes of the second half. Oswego
responded with three straight goals to cut the lead to 11-5 with 7:52
remaining in the quarter, but Cortland scored four straight times to take a
15-5 lead.
Hughes finished with two goals and an assist. Lambert and sophomore Andrew
Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) each scored twice, Maraia ended the
game with a goal and two assists and junior Tommy Maier (Fairport)
