goals, and junior Craig Degnan (Rockville Centre/South Side) tallied four
goals and an assist to lead nationally fourth-ranked Cortland to a 17 2 win
over Potsdam in a SUNYAC matchup at Davis Field Wednesday afternoon. With
the win, the Red Dragons improve to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in league play,
while the Bears fall to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the SUNYAC.
After junior Erik Lemelbaum (Syracuse/Nottingham) put Potsdam up 1-0 on an
assist from junior Eric Lehman (Lowville) at the 13:38 mark of the first
quarter, Cortland rattled off six straight goals to take a 6-1 lead at the
end of the first 15 minutes.
The Red Dragons would outscore the Bears 4-0 in the second quarter for a
10-1 halftime lead, as Degnan netted two goals and freshman Adam Hughes
(North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored his second of two goals on
the game.
After Degnan made it 11-1 early in the third quarter, Lemelbaum notched his
second goal of the game , a man-up score, also assisted by Lehman. Cortland
scored the last three goals of the quarter, one each by sophomore Andrew
Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep), Degnan and senior Rob McKeefrey
(Melville/Half Hollow Hills West), to make it 14-2. Cortland then added
three goals in the final 15 minutes for the final 17-2 margin.
Junior Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) started in goal
for Cortland and made three saves while surrendering two goals in 45:00.
Junior Michael Draper (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) stopped one shot in the
fourth quarter for the Red Dragons. Freshman Ryan Hanretty
(Williamsville/Williamsville South) registered 20 saves for Potsdam.
The Red Dragons travel to Oneonta on Saturday with the winner claiming the
SUNYAC regular-season title.
