Rob McKeefrey (Melville/Half Hollow Hills West) tallied his 100th career
point as nationally third-ranked Cortland defeated visiting RIT 15-6 in
rainy and muddy conditions at Davis Field.
Cortland (9-2) took a 4-0 lead after one quarter on goals by junior Chris
Magrin (Fairport), freshman Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North
Syracuse), McKeefrey and Elvin. McKeefrey reached the 100-point mark with
his goal. He finished the game with two goals and an assist and now has
scored 102 points (68 goals, 34 assists).
The Red Dragons took a 7-1 lead in seven minutes into the second quarter.
Junior Chris Osiecki (Endicott/Union-Endicott) scored an unassisted goal on
an end-to-end run, followed by a man-up goal from sophomore Andrew Roth
(Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) and a tally by sophomore Mike Bryant
(Hamburg/Frontier Central). RIT (4-4) closed the gap to 7-3 by intermission
on goals by sophomore Chris Copeland (Webster) and senior Chris Vallone
(Corning/Corning East) and drew within 7-4 just 11 seconds into the third
quarter on a Vallone goal.
Cortland, however, outscored the Tigers 8-2 the remainder of the contest.
Hughes and senior Patrick Gorman (Lindenhurst) each finished with two goals
and Roth had a goal and three assists. Junior Steve Feltmann (Long Valley,
NJ/West Morris Central) made 13 saves for the Red Dragons, who have not
allowed more than nine goals in a game this season.
Junior Josh Molinari (Oswego) led RIT with three goals and one assist and
Vallone finished with two goals. Junior goalie Chris James (Fairport)
recorded 15 saves in just more than 54 minutes of action. Sophomore Jon
Sinclair (Herndon, VA) played the final 5:25 but did not make any saves.
Cortland will return to action on Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m. at home
versus Brockport. The Red Dragons' final four regular-season games will be
against SUNYAC opponents.
