ROTH SCORES SIX GOALS IN #11 CORTLAND'S 11-5 WIN vs. #9 SPRINGFIELD

DURHAM, N.C. -- Sophomore Andrew Roth (Ridgewood, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) scored six goals, five in the fourth quarter, to lead 11th-ranked SUNY Cortland to an 11-5 win over ninth-ranked Springfield College in a Division III lacrosse matchup at Duke University. Cortland trailed 5-4 at halftime but held the Pride scoreless the entire second half. The Red Dragons tied the game early in the third quarter and scored six goals over the final 9:06 of the contest.

Cortland trailed 2-1 before a man-up goal by Roth and the first of three goals by senior Rob McKeefrey (Melville/Half Hollow Hills West) gave the Red Dragons a 3-2 lead after one quarter. Springfield responded by scoring the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Craig Gibson (South Salem/John Jay) tied the game at 3-3 just 58 seconds into the quarter. Freshman Derek Pedrick (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs) gave the Pride a 4-3 lead with 11:08 left and senior Bill Metzger (Northampton, MA/Northampton) connected with 5:31 left before intermission.

Cortland drew within 5-4 on a goal by junior Derek Elvin (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) with 29 seconds left in the half and tied the game on a McKeefrey goal, set up by freshman Adam Hughes (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse), with 12:33 left in the third quarter. Roth's unassisted goal gave the Red Dragons the lead for good with 9:06 left in the game. He scored again at the 7:49 mark and McKeefrey tallied with 7:23 left to put Cortland ahead 8-5. Junior Craig Degnan (Rockville Centre/South Side) assisted on both of those goals. Roth scored the final three goals of the game -- an unassisted goal with 6:17 left and a pair of man-up goals, both assisted by Elvin, with 3:36 and 1:39 remaining, respectively.

Cortland junior goalie Steve Feltmann (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) finished with 12 saves and Springfield sophomore goalie Tom Ulrich (Mastic/Lindenhurst) made 16 saves. Gibson led the Pride with two goals and Metzger finished with a goal and an assist.
