The Game Story:
CARLISLE -- Senior midfielder Ben Reed scored his team's final goal in
regulation by shooting backwards over his head from a seated position, then
notched the game-winner 47 seconds into the second overtime period, as
Haverford stunned host Dickinson, ranked eighth in this week's USILA
Division III poll.
The win keeps Haverford (8-3, 4-0), which was under consideration for
last week's national Top 20, a game ahead of second-ranked Gettysburg (8-1,
3-0) for the top spot in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils (7-2,
2-1) are the highest-ranked opponent ever defeated by head coach Mike
Murphy's team, surpassing Top 10 wins over #10 Franklin & Marshall (2004)
and #9 Hampden-Sydney (2005), respectively.
Reed's more conventional final tally was the only man-up goal of the
game, a statistical dead-heat that was tied following every quarter except
the third. Reed took all three Haverford shots in the second extra
four-minute period, including two during a one-minute tripping penalty on
Dickinson. Red Devils goalkeeper Kevin Riley (eight saves) made his only
overtime save on Reed's first extra-man-on attempt, but Reed converted a
feed from sophomore midfielder Dean Granoff with 11 seconds left in the
penalty for the win.
Junior goalie K.C. Peterson (12 saves) kept the guests in contention
with four fourth-quarter saves and two in the first overtime. Senior Joe
Mauri had provided three goals and an assist to help Haverford open a 7-5
lead after 45 minutes, along with two goals each from sophs Granoff and
Mike Distler. The Devils' Ed Boyd (four goals, assist) then scored
consecutive goals and answered a Matt Thorne-Fitzgerald marker to tie the
game at 8-8. After Reed's highlight-reel goal in regulation, the Devils'
Flynn Burch scored his second goal of the game on an Ed Lawless pass with
3:01 left to send the game into overtime.
