scored six goals and handed out two assists as the #1 nationally
ranked Bullets needed a second half surge to hold off #23 Franklin &
Marshall in the Centennial Conference regular season finale, 14-5.
In a game marked by physical play and few penalties, the Bullets and
Diplomats battled back and forth for 37 minutes before Gettysburg
scored eight unanswered goals to take a nine-goal victory.
Following a score by Gettysburg's Rich Sharp at 1:40, Bremer scored
the first of his goals at 4:49 off a restart and assist by Matt
Higgins. The lead grew to 3-0 at 8:41 as Pete Milliman finshed a
Gettysburg run with a point blank shot over the shoulder of
Diplomats' goalie Mike Sartorius (Fr., Summit, NJ/Summit).
The Diplomats got on the board with 17.4 seconds left on the clock in
the first period, when defenseman Kris Weaver (Sr., Laurel,
MD/Pallotti) took a groundball ten yards in front of the F&M bench
and went the distance for an unassisted score. The goal marked
Weaver's second career score.
On the opening face-off of the second period, Chad Tyler (Jr.,
Newtonville, NY/Western Reserve) received an unnecessary roughness
penalty to give the Bullets a man-up advantage at 15:07. Gettysburg
converted the chance 28 seconds later when Nick Purkat scored on a
one-timer for the first of two goals in the game. F&M responded with
a man-up goal of their own 4:17 later as Beau Smith (Jr., Baltimore,
MD/Gilman) side-armed a blast off a pass from Jon Singer (Jr.,
Reisterstown, MD/Boys Latin) through the five-hole of Gettysburg
goalie Tim McGinnis (Jr., Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield).
At 20:58, Bremer scored to pushed the lead back to three off a feed
from Milliman, before Bas Solleveld (So., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley)
finished a pass from Andrew Kuskowski (Sr., Huntington,
NY/Huntington) from five yards out to make the score 5-3.
With five minutes to play in the half, Bryan Nolan (Jr., Scottsdale,
AZ/Western Reserve) caused a turnover, scooped the ball and buried a
one-timer to cut the lead to one or the first of two times in the
game. Purkat added a goal 59 seconds later that would turn out to be
the eventual game winner for a 6-4 Gettysburg lead at intermission.
Following halftime, Colin Hanley (Fr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha)
broke three checks and outrun the Bullets' defense to stop, set-up
and drive a shot over the left shoulder of McGinnis to cut the lead
to 6-5. The goal marked Franklin & Marshall's final score of the day
as Gettysburg scored the next eight goals and won eight of the 11
faceoffs in the second half to hold on for the win.
Overall, Bremer led Gettysburg with six goals and two assists for
eight points, while Milliman added three goals and three assists.
In goal, Sartorius stopped 18 of the Bullets 39 shots on goal, while
McGinnis blocked away nine of the Diplomats 31 scoring attempts.
Franklin & Marshall (8-6, 3-3 CC) will continue the season on April
26 versus the Bullets in Gettysburg for the opening round of the 2002
Centennial Conference Men's Lacrosse playoffs. Game time is set for
1:30 p.m.
