With its fourth win in a row, the Bullets are off to their best start since the 2002 squad opened with six straight wins.
Gettysburg (4-0) senior attackman Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) and junior midfielders Ted Leonard (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) and Andrew Mavraganis (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) netted two goals apiece in the win. Junior netminder Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made eight saves in goal for his fourth win of the season. Hampden-Sydney senior attacker Vince Smith led all players with three points, all on assists.
The Tigers (3-2) were 2-for-6 in extra-man opportunities while allowing the Bullets to go up a man only once, which kept the visitors in the game.
Gettysburg won the opening faceoff with Leonard getting the ground ball, and Pryor scored his first goal 20 seconds later to give his team a lead it would not relinquish. After a Hampden-Sydney timeout, the game settled down, but the Bullets stayed on the offensive. Leonard made it 2-0 with 6:45 to play in the first. Pryor followed with another goal with 1:27 to go, and Mavraganis bookended the period, scoring with just four seconds showing on the clock.
The Bullets capped off a whirlwind span of 1:34 with another goal just seven seconds into the second quarter. Senior midfielder Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) won one of his nine faceoffs on the day to open the period. He poked the ball toward his own goal, collected the ground ball with a full head of steam and charged toward the cage, firing a shot that put Gettysburg up 5-0.
After a scoreless stretch of nearly 11 minutes, the Tigers got on the board on a goal by junior attacker Michael Via. Gettysburg answered with strikes from junior Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and Leonard in the last 2:31 of the half. Leonard’s score was a lightning-fast strike similar to Renzi’s goal earlier in the period, except he was forced to go the length of the field. With 1:26 to go, Hampden-Sydney junior midfielder Thomas Jennings put a shot on goal that was saved by Vaughan. Vaughan hit Leonard in stride near the right sideline about 20 yards shy of midfield, and he sprinted virtually uncontested in the Tigers’ end, ripping a shot that found the back of the net.
It appeared Gettysburg was set to roll to a victory with a strong second half, but four third-quarter penalties kept the Bullets in their own end for much of the period. The visitors scored on two of their four extra-man opportunities in the frame and outscored Gettysburg 3-1 in the second half behind goals from juniors Ryan Harrington, William Shell and Via. However, the 7-1 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
The Bullets will return to action on Wednesday afternoon for the second of five straight home games. The showdown with No. 2 Middlebury will get underway at 3:30 p.m. |
