The Game Story:
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – No. 3 Gettysburg jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead and withstood a six-goal second half by No. 19 Haverford to earn a 9-7 win in Centennial Conference (CC) action at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Bullets (12-1, 6-0 CC) got the first three goals of the game, all from members of the senior class, which played in its last regular-season home game. Senior attackman Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s) recorded a team-high two goals in the game, and junior attackman Greg Montgomery (Asheville, NC/St. Andrew’s School [DE]) tied for the team lead with two points on a goal and an assist.

For the Fords (9-5, 5-2 CC), junior attacker Max Tcheyan and sophomore midfielder Matt Thorne-Fitzgerald each recorded a pair of goals, and junior goalie K.C. Peterson stopped 17 shots.

Pryor opened the scoring just 1:08 into the game. That 1-0 Gettysburg lead would stand on the scoreboard for over seven minutes until senior attackman Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) struck with 6:50 left. On the ensuing faceoff, senior Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) controlled the draw, scooped the ground ball and ran the length of the field to score the Bullets’ second goal in a 17-second span. Renzi won 11-of-19 faceoffs on the day and collected 10 ground balls to mark his fourth straight game in double digits.

Thorne-Fitzgerald stopped the Gettysburg run just over a minute later on a feed from senior midfielder Ben Reed, but junior midfielder Ted Leonard (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) netted the answer to give the Bullets a 4-1 lead after one quarter.

Junior midfielder J.R. Parker (Summit, NJ/Summit) and sophomore attacker Trip Dyer (Ocean View, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]) each scored in the second quarter to run the Gettysburg lead to 6-1, and almost exactly 15 minutes later, Pryor connected again to make the lead 7-1 with 6:38 to play in the third quarter.

From there, the Fords chipped away at the Bullet lead. Senior attacker Joe Mauri and Reed each scored in a 37-second stretch shortly after Pryor’s goal, cutting the deficit to four at 7-3. Montgomery scored the last goal of the third quarter on an assist from senior midfielder T.J. Liberto (Arnold, MD/St. Mary’s).

The Fords went on to outscore Gettysburg 4-1 in the final 15 minutes, but they could not get over the top. Tcheyan and Thorne-Fitzgerald scored the next two goals early in the period. Bullets’ junior Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) struck with 3:32 to play, but Tcheyan answered just 15 seconds later. Haverford sophomore Mike Distler pulled the deficit to two goals before Gettysburg successfully played keep-away over the last 1:15 to seal the win.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Carlisle, Pa., to face No. 14 Dickinson in a key CC matchup. Game time is 4 p.m.
