The Game Story:
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) tied a career high with six goals while Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) added a career-best four goals as second-ranked Gettysburg opened the 2002 season with an 18-8 victory over Messiah in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Sophomore Nick Purkat (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) contributed to the Bullets' scoring with three goals and four assists for a career-high seven points in his first collegiate start. For the Falcons (0-1), Kevin Dennstaedt finished with a hat trick while Jono Linebaugh added two goals and Reed Horanburg contributed two assists. Gettysburg (1-0) opened the offensive attack just 11 seconds into the first quarter after senior John Czerapowicz (Wayland, MA/Wayland) scored directly off the face-off to give the Bullets an early 1-0 lead. Bremer put back the rebound of a Rich Sharp (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional) shot to make it 2-0 with 13:24 remaining in the opening quarter.

Following a Messiah timeout, Van Nostrand curled around the right post to bury his first goal of the day at 12:12 and, less than a minute later, Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) made it 4-0 with a man-up goal. Purkat found Bremer on the left wing for Gettysburg's fifth goal with 10:48 left in the first.

The Falcons got on the board with a man-up goal from Dennstaedt with 7:27 remaining in the opening quarter. After Bremer answered at 5:52, Dennstaedt added a second goal at the 4:18 mark and Dan Videon scored 40 seconds later to make it 6-3. Purkat took a pass from Van Nostrand and scored the final goal of the quarter on a point-blank shot from the right side for a 7-3 Bullet lead. Bremer posted two goals while Van Nostrand added one as Gettysburg outscored Messiah 3-1 in the second quarter and took a 10-4 lead into the break. The Falcons' Linebaugh scored on a behind-the-back goal to make it 12-5 at 12:13, but the Bullets were too much to handle, outscoring Messiah 6-2 in the third. Both teams each added two goals in the fourth.

Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made seven saves and Byron Banghart (White Hall, MD/North Harford) tallied one save on the day for Gettysburg. Chris Gilbert collected 14 saves for the Falcons in his collegiate debut. Gettysburg outshot Messiah 55-23 on the afternoon while going 3-for-9 in extra-man opportunities. The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Drew. Game time is 2 p.m.
