| | | | Current Record : (10-2) | Current Record : (7-4) | | | | Team Page For 2007 | Team Page For 2007 | | | | | | The Game Story: | GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman attackman Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) and sophomore attackman Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) had career days to lift No. 2 Gettysburg to a 15-4 win against Messiah in non-conference action at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Brody tied his career high with four goals and added an assist for a personal-best five points. Pucci set career highs with three goals, three assists and six points.
Gettysburg (10-2) junior attackman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep [Md.]) added two goals and two assists to help the Bullets crack double-digit wins for the 11th straight year. He also had four ground balls. Senior midfielder Jimmy Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) won 14-of-21 faceoffs and collected 10 ground balls. In goal, senior Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) made seven saves, caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls. He lowered his season goals against average to 4.25.
Messiah (7-4) junior attackman Nick Ricucci led the offense with two goals. Classmate Tim Sandusky pitched in with a goal and an assist to tie for the team lead with two points.
The Bullets, who had a 40-16 advantage in shots, posted its third straight shot margin of 19 or better. In the last four games, opponents are being held to an average of just 16.25 shot attempts. On Wednesday, junior defenseman Andrew McGann (Laguna, Calif./Holderness School [N.H.]) picked up seven ground balls. Senior Steve Hurst (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) had three scoops, and senior John Fairhurst (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) caused four turnovers.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead late in the first quarter. Brody converted a feed from senior midfielder Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) just 4:44 in to put the home team ahead for good. Dyer added a strike just over a minute later with freshman attackman Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) assisting.
Pucci and Brody scored later in the quarter before Ricucci put the Falcons on the board with 4:20 to play in the first.
Messiah was a man short for the first three minutes of the second quarter after the stick check caught an illegal stick. In all, the Falcons were penalized seven times for 8:30 as compared to just two one-minute infractions by the Bullets. Gettysburg converted on 3-of-7 chances, while blanking Messiah on both of its extra-man opportunities.
After the Falcons successfully killed the three-minute penalty, senior attackman Andrew Collins cashed in on an assist by Sandusky with over 10 minutes to play before halftime, pulling the team within two goals at 4-2. Pucci converted the game winner just 1:29 later on an extra-man opportunity. That goal started a 3-0 Gettysburg run that pushed the advantage to 7-2.
The last goal in that stretch gave Brody his hat trick, but Ricucci answered with 47 seconds showing before the break.
The Bullets pulled away after halftime, scoring four goals in the first 7:44 after the break, and allowing just one more Messiah tally the rest of the way. Pucci completed his hat trick to open the fourth quarter, and Gettysburg tacked on two more scores to complete the day.
Gettysburg will be back in action on Saturday when the Bullets close out the regular season road schedule at Swarthmore. Game time is set for 3 p.m. |
