(Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) each tallied a game-high four goals and six
points to lead second-ranked Gettysburg over Swarthmore 16-4 in the Centennial
Conference (CC) men's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday.
Van Nostrand scored twice in the first minute as the Bullets (6-0, 1-0
CC) opened an 8-1 halftime lead and cruised to their 29th consecutive CC
regular-season victory, a run that started in 1997.
Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) added a hat trick and two
assists for the Bullets, who geared up for meetings with No. 1 Middlebury and
No. 3 Washington next week by dropping the Garnet (4-4, 0-1 CC) for the ninth
straight time.
Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made nine saves as
the Gettysburg defense held Swarthmore scoreless until Blake Atkins' unassisted
goal with 4:30 left in the second quarter.
Atkins finished with a goal and an assist in the loss. Goalies Steve
Isbister and Ryan Croken combined for 13 saves while facing 50 Bullet shots.
Van Nostrand, who leads Gettysburg with 22 goals in the season's first
six games, found the net 47 seconds into Saturday's contest off an assist from
Chris Baran (Newington, CT/Newington), then scored on the Bullets' next trip
down the field to make it 2-0 after only one minute.
The teams battled scorelessly over the next 11 minutes before Bremer
pushed the lead to 3-0 with his first goal of the day.
Milliman got in the scoring column at the 13:08 mark of the second
quarter and Bremer finished a breakaway at 9:17 for a 5-0 lead. Milliman pushed
the lead to six before Atkins snapped the Garnet drought on an unassisted tally
with 4:30 left before the break.
Goals from Kevin Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) and Van Nostrand in the
last 2:23 of the half gave the Bullets' an 8-1 lead heading into the locker
room.
Tim Chryssikos pulled Swarthmore within 11-4 with 9:40 left in the
game, but Gettysburg scored the last five goals, including the first career
tally by freshman Campbell Henry (Chapel Hill, NC/Episcopal [VA]).
Nick Purkat (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) chipped in with a goal and an
assist for the Bullets.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against two-time
defending national champion Middlebury. Game time is 3:30 p.m. The top-ranked
Panthers downed the Bullets 15-10 in last season's NCAA championship game.
