seven second-half goals in a 9-3 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse
victory over visiting 11th-ranked Washington College this afternoon in
Gettysburg, PA. Gettysburg improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in conference
play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 8-3 and 3-2 with the loss.
Washington opened the scoring 1:59 into the game as junior attackman Chris
Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored off a feed from senior midfielder
Anthony Hidell (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill). The Bullets tied the score on
a goal by Joe Brody with 6:59 left in the first quarter and pulled ahead,
2-1, when Trip Dyer found Ben Sufrin for a goal with 5:32 left in the
period.
Hidell knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal with 11:26 left in the second
quarter, but the Bullets retook the lead by halftime as Sufrin scored with
7:46 to go before the intermission to give Gettysburg a 3-2 advantage.
The Bullets took control of the game in the final five minutes of the
third quarter, scoring three goals. Dyer scored with 4:21 on the clock,
Brody fired in a goal at 3:40, and Sufrin scored at 2:19 to give
Gettysburg a 6-2 lead. Washington managed to get back on the scoreboard
before the end of the period, however, as sophomore attackman Jimmy Kielek
(Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) found junior midfielder Kolyn Kirby
(Chestertown, MD/Kent County) for an extra-man goal with 13 seconds left
in the third to trim the lead to 6-3.
Zach Pucci opened the fourth-quarter scoring for the Bullets with 10:43
left and Andrew Mavraganis made it 8-3 1:46 later. Dyer added another
goal, this time off an assist from Greg Montgomery, with 5:43 on the
clock, to provide the final margin.
Suffrin led Gettysburg with three goals, while Dyer had two goals and one
assist and Brody tallied two goals. Hidell led Washington with one goal
and one assist. Pat Vaughn made three saves for the Bullets, while
sophomore goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made six stops
for the Shoremen.
Gettysburg held a 26-14 advantage in shots in the game and a 38-26
advantage in ground balls. Jimmy Gates took all 16 face-off for the
Bullets, winning 11.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial
Conference home game against Swarthmore.
