five goals and Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made 16 saves
to lead second-ranked Gettysburg over No. 11 Western Maryland 20-5 in a battle
of the Centennial Conference's (CC) final two unbeaten men's lacrosse teams on
Wednesday.
Milliman scored twice during a 5-0 burst that gave the Bullets (9-1, 4-0 CC) a
seven-goal third-quarter lead, then added a hat trick to help the hosts score
the game's final 10 goals. McGinnis and the Gettysburg defense held in check a
Green Terror offense that was averaging a conference-best 15.3 goals per game
and hadn't scored fewer than 10 goals in a game this season.
Kevin Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) and Rich Sharp (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough
Reg.) each netted their second career hat tricks as the Bullets extended their
CC regular-season winning streak to 32 straight games. Jake Van Nostrand
(Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) chipped in with two goals and two assists.
Western Maryland's All-America attacking duo of Tom Brown and Joe Ellis,
averaging a combined 12.7 points per game entering Wednesday's contest, managed
just three goals and two assists on the afternoon. Brown's lone goal of the day
tied him with Haverford's Chris Anderson for first place on the CC's all-time
goal-scoring list (190).
Goals from Sharp, Sean McTernan (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and Van
Nostrand staked Gettysburg to a 3-0 lead in the game's first three minutes.
Sam Katz and Justin Merson scored goals 25 seconds apart to pull the Green
Terror (10-1, 4-1 CC) within one, but the Bullets responded with a 7-1 run to
take command.
Smith finished a solo run at 7:08 and McTernan threaded the needle on another
unassisted goal to make it 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.
With Western Maryland in an extra-man situation in the opening minute of the
second quarter, Brown beat McGinnis on a nifty behind-the-back shot to cut the
deficit to two.
Minutes after Brown hit the side netting and Merson rung a shot off the post,
Smith and Sharp struck again in a span of 11 seconds and Milliman ripped his
first two goals of the game just 12 seconds apart to make it 9-3 at the break.
Ellis got the Green Terror within 10-5 midway through the third, but Milliman
scored three more times to key a 4-0 burst to the end of the quarter.
Gettysburg cruised to the finish line by scoring all six fourth-quarter goals.
McTernan finished with two goals for the Bullets while face-off specialist John
Czerapowicz (Wayland, MA/Wayland) won 16 draws on the day, including a
10-for-14 showing in the second half.
The Gettysburg defensive effort also included a 44-20 edge in ground balls and
11 failed Green Terror clears.
Rob Weaver finished with three assists for Western Maryland.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against No. 7 Salisbury. Game
time is 1 p.m.
